Historic Moment For Humankind..

Recommended Posts

I'll give you an example..... Big crowd of folk, someone secretly blows a dog whistle..... No one hears it, it's out of our hearing frequency but a dog would. He's got the right receiver for it. To us there is no sound. Sound is only vibrating air at different frequencies. We can't hear radio waves, the electricity in our homes...... Unless your ear can pick up the frequency of the vibrating air, it isn't sound. And for anyone to suggest it is, is laughable.

a question that's been debated and reflected on by some of mankind's greatest minds over the past few thousand years solved by Baw in a nutshell, is there any end to the mans talents? :D

well seeing how (in his own head) he is always right, then maybe he is right about this (in his own head)...... :hmm::D

so to expand on that theory, if i close my eyes and can not see the gun i won't get hurt as it doesn't exist because i can no longer see it :icon_eek::hmm:

A gun isn't vibrating air, it's tangeable. But if you plug your ears you won't hear it going off

So if the dog whistle vibrates the air at the right frequency for the dog to hear but not us, does it make a sound?

so is a log landing on your swede but if you don't hear it, it won't hurt , vibrating air can cause horrific internal injuries even if you don't hear the blast, so vibrating air is very tangable

I'm gonna have a go at this lol..

There is a noise, just no receiver to pick up the noise..

If no ones home and the phone is ringing, although you can't hear it it's still making a noise surely ??

Right next problem lol

it makes sound, it's just you can't perceive it! :tongue2: Sound and being able to perceive it are two different things..

It's only sound if you have something to reproduce it into sound I.e an ear drum. If I sing into a mike that isn't connected to a speaker, no sound will come out of it, same principle.

Nope! You can't hear ultrasonic waves but they are still sound, hence the term 'Ultrasound..'

At certain frequencies you'll feel it alright, like a sonic boom. But vibrating air rattling your lungs won't make sound if your ears can't pick up the frequency.

They are only sound if picked up by the correct equipment hence why the army used sonar etc :) if you can't pick up the vibrations, no sound is there :)

 I'm an acoustic Physicist and I'm being told the definition of sound.

That's laughable!

Sound is the excitation of a wave in a media. You don't have to hear it for it to be sound.

Took your time coming back with that, google slow, your superiors on a lunch break  you need a receiver to hear sound. We know how sound is produced but thanks for googling it for us ;)
