It could be just knocked and bruised. It could be broken.

This was badly broken and you can see the nail is pointing in a different direction...

All a vet will do is scan it (I imagine) which means £££ and then tell you to rest it or have it removed depending on the outcome.

I rested her for 6 weeks. Then lead walked for 4 weeks and then crossed my fingers and let her off. That was about 6 months ago and fingers crossed its been ok.

If she's in pain with it then holding it in a bucket of ice water for a few minutes really seems to ease the pain

Looks like its been dislocated: the swelling you see is soft tissue damage: ligaments stretched or torn. Swelling occurs in order to protect the damaged joint. Whether or not it is still out of place is unknown. Sometimes, if you pull on the toe in a straight line away from the foot in the direction the other toes are pointing, and at the same angle, you can pull the joint back into place, but often, it has gone back into place by the time you notice it as the dog will have carried on running.

Any injury like this needs a good few weeks' rest before you can run the dog again. Depending on how badly damaged the ligaments are, it can take up to 12 weeks for them to heal. Most people don't give toes nearly long enough, and run the dog the moment the swelling goes down. The dog damages the still fragile joint again, and the lump remains forever, known as a 'calloused up' joint in Greyhound terms. A hard lump where there is restricted or no mobility in the joint.

Dog will still run, but be prone to lameness if it bashes the joint or runs on hard ground. Old time Greyhound men used to cut the claw right back to the toe when this sort of injury happens, thereby reducing the impact of the toe on the ground while it is healing. It is vital to stick to lead work only while the joint is healing.

Bone Radiol can also be used, which by its heating action brings blood to the area and promotes healing.

I would of cut it back at the time fella & gave anti inflammatory medication...

I would give it cage rest and then lead walking...

If our concerned go to the vets today, come Monday what's the point ??

They will advice rest and maybe give you some metacam.

My dogs toe is the same at the mo just swollen some plank came out with me a couple days ago and stood on his foot but walks and runs normal

Always smile when I read that the dog's toe/wrist/foot is swollen but it's still running okay/normal.....clue would be in the swelling and that would tell me it shouldn't be running....first thing I'd be reaching for is the lead and the last thing I'd be doing is letting it run around....

rest rest and more rest, if its been a proper dislocation as opposed to a subluxation (a partial dislocation or one that comes out and goes back on its own accord) the surrounding structures tendons, ligaments etc are going to need time to heal as these carry very little blood, thats why the liniment type remedies work as they increase blood flow, there is the risk using these that you can burn the skin with overuse best to keep an eye out for that, like has been said a callous will strengthen the area but i wouldn't do anything other than cage rest working up to a gentle on the lead toilet walk for at least a month

I would say that is tendon damage, had my bitch out for a mooch day time about 6 weeks ago, started limping for no apparent reason, but noticed her to middle toes were swollen took her to the greyhound vet, who confirmed it was tendon damage 4 - 5 weeks on the lead, the best part about it she was walking normal the next day has nothing had happened.

Her toes are still swollen now, and probably stay like that for the rest of her life, I have had her on the beach for 1 1/2 hours twice a day for the last week with no sign of limping fingers crossed
