Tattoos

Recommended Posts

I have arranged to have my dogs ear tattooed tomorrow afternoon because as I understand it tattoos are the only legal proof of ownership available. I'm aware that some dogs have their ears mutilated to remove tattoos but the advice I've been given is that this is rare in lurchers (more common in greys) and that tattoos serve as a deterrant to theives.

I'm having last minute cold feet though.

Any thoughts from anyone?

Thanks.

yes i would say tattooing a dog is a good idea, the best place to tattoo a running dog would of course be inside one of the legs, that way anyone steals it they would know they have to tattoo over the original

or chop it's leg off which would render said dog worthless to the thieves,as for a terrier it's more

difficult,as you say the ears can be mutilated but that doesn't stop the terrier working, also depending on what tattoo code you use, would have to be thought out maybe you should include microchipping as a backup, don't forget if you are involved in any illegal activities the dog can then be traced back to you,

if there are thieves operating in your area from time to time it's a good idea and as long as the tattoo

is very distinctive it is a worthwhile security measure, but the best security measure is prevention so you

should first consider increasing the home security first,

Higgins.

Oh...too many jokes!!! :whistling:

Sorry Scal, yep theres logic in it, as identification why the hell not.....But.....if some scummy b*****d has the balls to come into your property and take your companions he won't give a flying feck wether they are tattoo'd or not! Best you can hope for in that situation is the Tatt's can trace 'em back to you if there dumped or if you get a sighting you can definatley verify.

Ears being taken off.......maybe its been heard of with Greyhounds (though never by me) just cant see it with lurchers.... :hmm: .now where did I see them one ear'd merles ???? :whistling:

Cheers

You must be the only person on here that hasn't read at least two shocking accounts copied to this site in the past about ear mutilation of greyhounds!

Tattooing a Dogs leg is a sound idea. Over here now they 'Cold Brand' horses ~ ye think Dogs get chored? Try keeping an un branded horse in Eire!

Of course, Pit Bull's have to be tattooed anyway. I mean, how f*ckin ridiculous is that? They look hard enough as it is! (Yeppers; The oldies are the goodies!)

You should definately get your dogs done, its a good means of identification especially when coupled with a microchip  If your dogs go missing you will be kicking yourself saying why oh why didnt I have it done, trust me I have been there

I do all mine in both ears as pups and its a very simple procedure. If you do them as pups the tattoo grows as the ear grows and looks far better. If anyone off the site in the central or south scotland area wants their dogs done I will do them just send me a pm, if doing adult dogs though, you must provide your own muzzle for the dog as adult dogs tend to react more strongly to the process than young pups.

Well both the dogs have been done. It hurt them for about a second and then they thoroughly enjoyed having the ink rubbed in. Cost £20 per dog. Even my very hand shy bitch has already put it behind her and is more interested in when she's getting her chicken wings.

£20 what a rip off, I usually do them for free if it someone I know and £5 to anyone else, but then I dont charge over the odds for chipping either, I just charge £5 for that too, the price of the chip. When a simple thing like a tattoo or chip could mean the difference between a dog ending up PTS or rehomed due to the owner not being able to be reunited then I dont think its right to profit from that. Some councils will chip dogs free of charge as part of the dog warden service, if you ring your local council and ask, I know North Lanarkshire have an initative where the dog warden will come and chip your dog for free, the dogs trust also have chipping days where they charge £9 or something like that. Most vets charge £20 - 30 for chipping, bloody rip off, sorry for the rant but it annoys me because I think more people would have it done if it was cheaper and the more dogs that are done and able to be identified, the better the rescue situation would be as dogs would be traceable to their owners and it might make the people who let their dogs wander the streets think twice as they would be accountable and made to pay to fetch the dog out of the pound :wallbash::censored:
