Guest SJM
Its not very often I ask for help but this one has really got me stumped I bought a camcorder recently and Ive been shooting a bit of footage with a view to making a dvd using windows movie maker as I am used to using that to make wee short films using either photo slideshows or clips from my digital camera, but for some reason the clips from the new camcorder dont seem to be compatible with the windows movie maker software It will let me import the video files but when I try to drag the clips onto the video timeline, it wont let me and only seems to recognise them as audio files? Ive looked through all the help files etc and cant figure out where I am going wrong, is there anyone who has experience of using windows movie maker who can give me some pointers as to where I might be going wrong? Fecking technology

higgins 75
It could be a format that needs converting before WMM can recognise it,i used to have probs with WMM its annoying, try this site www.videohelp.com, loads of articles and guides regarding video/dvd making, converting tools etc;there are plenty of free downloads for the tools, Higgins. Guest SJM
They are MPEG Videos, so I would have thought they would be ok to upload to WMM? Cheers Higgins I will take a look at that site now and see if it helps shed any light
speedlamper 0
might be a daft question but when you import the mpegs are you doing via import video or import audio or music
Guest SJM
Im doing it via import video mate, but it only seems to upload them as audio files well, that was yesterday mind, today I tried again and its now giving me this ferking message ***filename**** mpg could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from whatever the feck that means It is really doing my head in because I like working with WMM I can add titles, music, edit clips etc and join them alltogether to make a dvd, without WMM all Ive got is the raw footage and I want to make it more professional looking. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated, Ive had a look through that site but its HUGE I dont even know where to begin does anyone have any pointers where to look for help?? Guest SJM
Forgot to add, would I be better off downloading WMM 2 as I think the version on my comp must be WMM1, is there any added benefits to 2 or is the original just as good/best?
Guest The Big Fish
Mpeg needs to be converted to AVI before windows movie maker will reconise it, mpeg is not a editable format. Do a search for a free program called VirtualDub, i beleive that it can convert mpeg to avi.
Guest SJM
Thankyou Big Fish This has really been pissing me off these last couple of weeks ever since I got the camcorder, I just assumed it would work ok with WMM. Is converting the files a simple enough process? If not, can I perhaps pick your brains a bit more? as you seem to know a bit about making short films, loved the light sabre net making one btw
Guest SJM
I have downloaded it but I havent a clue what Im supposed to do with it now. I tried clicking on it and adding files but I got this error : MPEG import filter : Invalid pack at position 3: marker bit not set; possibly MPEG-2 stream Is there an idiots guide to this sort of stuff for blondes like me ? Failing that, since WMM seems to be getting the thumbs down, is there a downloadable program (free pleeeease ) thats easy to work with and takes MPEG clips??
bill88 6
Div x,its a free download for the player only, but you get the converter free for 30 days.I have used it to convert mpeg,to avi, etc.Hth's,Bill www.divx.com
Guest The Big Fish
SJM, if your having trouble with the virtualdub software, you could try windows media encoder, another free download from the microsoft website. You might be able to convert mpeg to wmv, then edit your clips in movie maker, but i suspect that there will be a loss in video and audio quality. I know it has a capture facilty, so you might be able to capture straight from your camera. Worth a try! P.s i bet your camera is a hard disk type, i.e you dont use dv tapes? Guest SJM
Yes its a Sony Handycam HDD I bought it cos I thought it would be a straightforward case of record from camcorder - plug into computer - edit using WMM and then burn to disc. Bill I think I have that DivX thing on my computer allready but have no idea what it does or how to use it I will give that a try Big Fish and post back if I have any more bother (which I probably will knowing my bloody luck )
