Dubba 72
As others have said go down the FAC route and get a proper tool for the job. Out of interest if you do snare or trap how are you planning on dispatching the caught fox? Quote Link to post
barrywhite 282
some one said earlier on, a captive bolt gun .my mate used a spring power one to despatch some animals once sounded a bit bad to me . Quote Link to post
geordieh 74
We are suffering from a major fox problem. There are a pack of 6 digging up our garden, along with trying to get at the kids rabbits in the shed. I own a HW80 & a HW 100 in .22, but I am aware these are not fit for this purpose. Can anyone recommend a FAC air riffle, as I don't really want to go down the rim fire route. I know you guys will have the answer. Where do you live I am sure someone who lives close with an open ticket will come and give you a hand Geordie Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,935
Polystyrene, Glass and a 12 bore. How big is this garden, do you have neighbours ? You really need to stop thinking about centre fire rifles, and start thinking about traps, or maybe a shotgun. Put it this way, if your back garden is ,, Balmoral,,, for instance, you will get an FAC approved, If it`s,, 36 small terrace urbansville,, you`ll just get a warning for being daft enough to apply for fac in the first place. walshie 2,804
Cage and a .410. Job done. Quote Link to post
lapin2008 1,587
Cage and a .410. Job done. .410 is probably the easiest option for already caught foxes, a moderated one will mean (hopefully) you can get the job done without there being an uproar from the neighbors If you have lots of permission best get a rimfire OKd for the land you shoot on as you may come into some challenge from the FEO when it comes to using a RF solely for shooting foxes in your back garden (you may have to state that you want to only shoot trapped foxes) depending on the size of garden/layout/backstops etc Quote Link to post
ChrisJones 7,975
Certainly not the forum for fox control... Maybe a move to trapping and snaring? Quote Link to post
moxy 617
Certainly not the forum for fox control... Maybe a move to trapping and snaring? Well said chris. Airguns. FAC or not are not the tools for the job and its not up for debate. Topic moved Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
FAC air rifle for Fox in your back garden. Rocking horse s*** comes to mind. Long term start applying for a shotgun, a first grant FAC for fox control in your back garden is not going to happen, short term get a Pest Controller in! Cage traps can/will likely take forever and cost a fortune for 6 (if they work at all), and snares don't normally go down well with family/children/neighbours. 1 Quote Link to post
Deker 3,478
If you are going for an FAC to sort a Fox problem you can get a sweet little rimfire .22LR or 17HMR centrefire Whats that, a HMR is a Rimfire? that will do the job very well and for far less cost than a souped-up PCP. The only true answer for foxing and a lot less faff than with an air rifle. If the Police illegal lamping/poaching patrols found you with a dead fox and an air rifle, they can, and likely will confiscate it, WHY, what do they care if you shot a fox? to determine it's power with proper ballistic lab tests as suitably powerful enough for shooting foxes. ??? Regardless of the fact that you have a legal right to shoot with an air rifle on ticket. WHAT?? Does it meet the limits for foxing ??? That's just one possible headache. The rest are the same whatever type of FAC rifle you own (home security, Police visit check etc) so, you might as well cut the hassle factor with the law. Get an FAC and a decent little bolt action rim/centrefire and you'll have a lot less to worry about. You have good reason with a patent fox problem for applying for one too. A dead fox shows whatever gun he used works, and .....what is powerful enough for foxing and what limits are there to meet for foxing? Edited September 11, 2013 by Deker 2 Quote Link to post
ChrisJones 7,975
The cheapest possible solution would be to find where they're coming in and then block the holes, fix the fence, etc... But then we have no idea how big the garden is, where it's located, etc... You're not going to get an FAC/SGC for shooting foxes in your back garden. Unless you're at Balmoral... Quote Link to post
Born Hunter 17,751
A pack of foxes!............. Shit, I'd be calling David Attenborough! 1 Quote Link to post
Matt 160
Don't forget you don't have to prove 'good reason' to get a SGC you just have to be a safe and responsible person. I'd be reluctant to tell any FEO that I intended shooting foxes in the garden. .410 is an ideal dispatch weapon, and a 12 bore with the right cartridge will make a good job of them. Craig83 52
.303 daystate wolverine is what you need mateWould do the job, but try and get it conditioned for fox, properly no chance. Best just snare or trap, your aloud one swift clean blow to the head to dispatch. Daystate Wolverine in my county is conditioned for Fox Quote Link to post
