Training Lurchers To Jump?¿

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I've hit a little problem. When my whippet x was a pup I couldn't stop him jumping he would jump anything and everything I never encouraged him to jump at a young age. He is now 7.5 months and I am trying to get him to jump and he is just not interested at all. Any training methods [NO TEXT TALK] has used in the past or any good ways to get his confidence up for jumping would be gratefully appreciated cheers lads. start low (in the puppy pic i started with 1 bar.....5" ) lots of praise, be consistent with the command ( always use the same 1 ) build confidence at step 1 before step 2, don't give the pup too much too soon theres no hurry, be patient and add variety (wire, wood, mesh, walls, gates ) as the pup progresses , later i use jump training to reinforce retrieve training as well mixing it up with ball, dummies and game

Go over a fence yourself and keep walking he will soon learn.

That may Work. You could also have the Dog Running up and Down the Fenceline Barking it's Fecking Head off.Better off training the dog to jump
it probably will but if its some where that doesn't matter about nose then it's fine, they'll soon learn to follow

it will jump when its ready and another dog would give it encouragement, but a word of warning too much confidence to early can cause accidents that might have effects that last a lifetime.

How true is that...lot's of folk who should know better fire young dogs over totally unsuitable obstacles far too young as a kind of party trick. Then reap the benefits of injuries which sometimes never come right and do indeed last a lifetime.

I'm never in a hurry to start them jumping...my collie x pup is 8 months old and jumped nothing yet....he's big and heavy and the risk of injury from a heavy pup landing on immature wrists and shoulders just isn't worth it....

I'll teach him to jump when he's around 12-14 months old....it'll only take an afternoon - jumping's the easiest thing you'll ever teach a dog....my dogs are all brilliant jumpers and none were jumping much if at all before a year old.....no rush.....

Ok brill I was thinking of using a long net, quickset version that way I can adjust the height of the net by adjusting the grommets. Cheers for the advice. The dogs brother same age obviously and he jumps medium regualr size fences barberd wire etc!!! With ease. When I saw this it sort of got me thinking that's all. But like most if you say there is no rush. Let pups be pups as they say!
