Think this all boils down to the seller being honest and telling the interested parties that someone has pick of the litter then after that the picks are on a first come first served basis at whatever age the first choice is done. This is what Hubbs off here did for me. He offered to gift me pick of the litter and said he wouldn't let anyone else view them until I picked mine and if I wanted to wait until they were 8 weeks I could. I pretty much knew the one I wanted from a photo, well it was between 2 and my mind was made up when i went to see them at 4.5 weeks. I wanted the calmest, quietest, steadiest pup which wasn't nervous or shy. It wasn't scared to come to me but it was just as happy to curl up on its own and go to sleep. It has worked for me. She just eats and sleeps Without sounding like a knob.... Maybe thats why he has 2.... now 1 pup left over? ..... if you would have chosen yours the week or so it was born....maybe they would have all homes sorted earlier than now? .... .... Maybe so but how can you pick a pup the week it's born? You can't see it playing and gauge the temperaments can you? Quote Link to post

That's why I went at 4 weeks to pick one mate so he knew which one was gone and he could tell the lads who wanted one what was left. I was just making the point that he offered to wait until 8 weeks if I wanted to which I thought was really good of him Quote Link to post
birddog 1,354
i was told by a greyhound breeder long ago, pick a female the colour of the sire or a male the colour of the dam.....some logic there to my mind, the pup may have inherited qualities from both parents, my two bitches just now are the same colour as their sires and they're no too bad 1 Quote Link to post

skycat 6,174
When I bred a few litters I never let anyone choose a pup until they were 6 weeks old. Pups change a lot from birth to 6 weeks, and their characters don't really show until they are weaned and running about. Even then, it would be hard to predict exactly how they'll turn out. Some pups don't show their true natures and temperaments until they are away from the rest of the litter. As far as ability is concerned, you can only go by the parents and ancestors, though experienced breeders may will pick out a future star from little things in the way the pups behave. 1 Quote Link to post

BORDERSCOT 3,816
There's some amount of shit and bunkum bandied about when it comes to choosing pups......if they're happy and healthy and well fed and well fleshed, alert and bright, bold and inquisitive with a conformity free from obvious defects just choose it, take it away and make a dog of it....... Ain't difficult.... And if you can't tell if a pup is all of the above try goldfish..... 3 Quote Link to post
