THE GENERAL 1,982
Yes on a few occasions this has happened me, especially at the beginning of the season, places look well ran and you would put money on it they were holding, though with a young inexperienced terrier running the burrows and giving them a good hoke but saying NO, It can play with you head a bit. My best advice is to bring an older experienced terrier along just to confirm that there's no one at home. That way your mind will be put at rest and you will know for certain whether the young terrier is doing a good job or not. 5 Quote Link to post

rob284 1,682
sometimes, if you've given enough time before you enter a dog, the fox can get into a tight enough place on some hard earths. most dogs will get frustrated and quickly lose interest, especially the hard dogs that want to be in the quarries face. depends what your after but an experience 'one of them' will quickly dig itself in as soon as it hears you approach the 'earth' . woottonsheart 214
Whats longest you lads have waited for the terrier to find its quarry . Hve you had one where it comes out the earth goes back in repeatedly ? Quote Link to post
Cleanspade 3,322
we doubted a good dog many years ago. due to it coming away after a short time on a few occasions. we got a little disheartened and decided to dig to the last mark on the box . and low and behold he had got the knack of throttling them.. shame really as he was a good bolting dog. just goes to show though. never write a terrier off untill you know exactly whats happened. good luck with the young dog this season. i wonder how many have been culled down to the owner not reading the dog ./ situation right 3 Quote Link to post

Hve you had one where it comes out the earth goes back in repeatedly ? waited 3hrs plus in some big places-ive seen dogs that do the 10 mins then come out for a drink-lol-maybe the 4 you dug with him have put him off?-is the quarry green or seen a dog before?over incouragment on your mates behalf maybe?some dogs struggle finding in multi tubes/levels if the earths arent straight forward-you need a reliable lurcher to mark or reliable terrier to run through after the young un has said no-then you will know for sure.atb Quote Link to post

fireman 10,869
How do you know the place has a stop end in it as well?,i know a place only once has it been dug due to this and around and a few good proven terriers have gone for hours in some cases but if there's no stop end then it ain't getting stopped up is it? . 2 Quote Link to post

Snoz 29
bottom line is , if you cant prove the dog wrong dont do anything just take him home and bring something out to prove him right or wrong next time. As soon as you can prove either way then deal with it acordingly . Its a nightmare if you've got a dog that you have high hopes for and it makes a mistake or you think theres something in. We've all been to spots at this time of year that a raked out to hell and padded down for the dog to not even bother evn though you can almost taste them!!!, its all part of the game. If theres one thing I have learned its that doing something in the heat of the moment without absolute proof only makes you wonder about it for longer ie you always wonder if you did the right thing but if you prove it theres no regrets !!!!!!!!!!! atb 2 Quote Link to post
