Ideation 8,216
I was wondering if anyone had any experience of having a dogs toe amputated and how it was to heal / recover and how it affected the dogs performance after? Cheers. Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
Depends on which toe on which foot ...... Quote Link to post
Chris Parsons 2
Depends which toe I think the middle two are a lot more important. Pal of mine had the outside toe took off can't remember what the problem was but once it has healed it didn't make any difference to the dog Quote Link to post

Sirius 1,391
It does depend on the toe. I have had one outside toe removed from a fore foot from a dog and my advice would be go to a vet who is experienced in running dogs! I made the mistake of using a local vet and it ended costing thousands of pounds for 3 operations and a referral to specialist vet for the last op to get it sorted. The dog went on too work well until he broke a leg working. Edited September 2, 2013 by Sirius Quote Link to post
Giro 2,648
I got a middle front toe off.. At first seemed great, the dog recovered well and was getting a some good scores. Then the outside toe went several times. I gave the dog away for a pet .. The middle toe had been broken multiple times before I got it off and the last brake the joint was smashed to bits.. I wish I had tried to have it pinned. I jumped in getting the toe off.. Hope yer dog comes good Quote Link to post

BIG G wheton machine 1,594
just as long as its not the bitches camel toe, if you amputate that then you could end up with a triploid. (sexless) 1 Quote Link to post

Westy76 546
Just had a front outer toe taken off as it was smashed below the joint as to how he runs I haven't a clue but fingers firmly crossed. Quote Link to post
skycat 6,173
Every dog is different is spot on: depends a lot on the type of dog and how it runs. Fast, up and at 'em dogs which turn hard may have problems with outside toes on front feet: the outside toe is the propping toe when the dog turns hard: I've had a bitch who gradually started to suffer from shoulder and wrist problems with that outside toe gone. She lasted two seasons without the toe before being totally finished. Quote Link to post
flat land hunter 19
if the dog as a broken toe,for best results fillet the toe, which is to remove broken bone to next joint & leave all dogs pad when healed shrinks slightly but far stronger & better 1 Quote Link to post
weasle 1,119
I'd only do it again as a last option,Im the worst in the world for giving a dog a couple of weeks of before starting them again even if you go some where quite you can be sure something will jump and take them for a run on bad ground and your back to square one.A bit rich but you would be better of trying to give a month of first ,and then starting back slowly. I had a outside toe (well the dog did)of a couple of seasons ago,it did effect her turn she still goes lame on it,you have to work her rest her,and slowly but surely the foot has slowly flattened out.
