WILF 46,778
Personally, I have always thought about football in terms of supporters and fans.........supporters go to the games, pay their money and "support" the club........fans just like the team Supporters will always mean more than a fan......that's not having a go at anyone because I have relegated myself to "fan" status for years, its just how I see it

But I by no means support the club... They are the only team I've followed and it hasn't always been success ridden.. Now there's lads on here that go all over the country to watch their team they are supporters without a doubt.... I also find a lot of supporters don't play, every weekend for me was filled with playing the game.... It is UTD fans who are tarred with the glory hunter tag though, where in truth people of our age group would be Liverpool fans if it was glory you were after back when we were kids lol

gnasher16 30,091
I dont think you necessarily have to go to games to be a supporter we all support England but we dont all go to the games......some of the most passionate support ive seen is in the lower leagues i loved the championship a few years ago it was one of my most enjoyable seasons in years....going round different grounds seeing real genuine support thats not tarnished by money and fame...........without being biased to my little Hammers our average attendance in the year we was in the championship didnt drop from any other season......whereas if clubs like Stoke or Villa etc went down to the championship their average attendance would drop terribly.....its the difference between true support of your club and football fans wanting to see the stars.

Lab 10,979
Personally for me I feel less of a fan than I did when I went every home/away game for 7 years. My love for Celtic won't change whether I go or not but when your travelling around the country spending your hard earned I think you rank higher than the fan that sits and shouts at the tv. Hopefully in the years to come I can have a few extra pounds in my pocket and ill get a season ticket again, at this point I time work and money have to come first.

Malt 379
In respect to me gnasher thats bollox your talking, my father said i always loved utd from bout the age of 4ish im now 48 and live nowhere near manchester and my passion for my club utd is as big as anybodys in my view, but your view is your view. What do you call " passion " ?.............I dont see how any fan can be as passionate as the fans from the club the area is in........Passionate football areas are based around the club the area is in.......in the workplace, the pubs, cafes etc..........................How can there be passionate support for Man Utd in Margate ? I dont know you from adam mate but you sound a passionate football fan like many of us........ive just never understood how passion for a club you have no affiliation to works thats all. Plenty of passion in the pubs when there's a big match on round here mate! Guess in areas that aren't blessed with a proper club to support you've to to find your outlet where you can get it.. Might sound a bit hypocritical coming from me, but the one I don't understand is people living next door to a proper club choosing one at the other end of the country to support.. I ask again though....what is passion ?......Is it ranting and raving like a lunatic at the tv......or is it doing a 500 mile round trip to watch a boring nil nil draw then doing the same thing 2 weeks later knowing it could easily be the same outcome........I accept not everyone go,s to football and not everyone has a local club as such............................but i think often we get confused between football fans who are passionate about a club,.......and club fans who are passionate about football......guys like Malt and Lanesra, through no fault of your own id class as the latter. Cant really disagree with that Gnash.. I don't bother much now but when I was younger I used to buy the shirt every year, subscribe to the club channel and sky sports, etc, and to me that is a way making some sort of financial contribution to your club even if it turning up and buying a ticket all the time. The Welsh national rugby team is my main passion, for me that is probably the equivalent of what West Ham is to someone like yourself. That is the one sporting team I place above all others. oneredtrim 148
' whereas if clubs like Stoke or Villa etc went down to the championship their average attendance would drop terribly '..... Villa have clocked some royal attendencies in the old thrid division (45k+).....granted those records are not a season average but even that (35k+) is worthy of note. Plastics seem to be inevitable, seen two out of town blues being asked to f**k off home after telling a blue crowd that they thought 'our fans' singing the hey Jude (hey Citeh) anthem was a touch cheesy with it being a scouse song (sacrilarr), unfortunately for the complainant all the blues in residence were also there the first time it was ever sung (newcastle in the Cup '69) and the irony of the Beatles being number 1 at the time along with ourselfs kind of escaped them, the same mob were there @ the wembley play-off with the same song being sung, presumably they missed that also and the notion it was a big occassion Blue song seems to have escaped thier thinking..they left the boozer with thier tails between thier legs and a loud rendition of 'the city is ours, f**k-off back plasticsville, the city is ours'. Well funny enough i didnt do real proper research i just came up with a couple of mid table sides off the top of my head.....................but im sure you still got my point. Editted to add..........curiosity always manages to get the better of me with things like this so i checked ......Although Villa set an attendance record of 48k during their 1971 season in the third division......their average attendance that year was 26k.
