paulus 26
Well you can also draw down at the same time, while the fund gets smaller it still is accruing interest from the investment slowing the rate it diminishes, but yes you are partly right and this is why younger people need to put a little thought in to pensions. Also you will have your state pension which will be around 140 a week. Don't forget if you can live on the interest only then you've got the whole thing to leave to your kids. Too many people (like myself) only start to think about it when they get older, then there is less years for the investment to accrue and the contributions have to be much bigger. If I told you what I was putting in to mine you'd probably fall off your chair, I had no pension up to two years ago Also as a side note when you get closer to the age where you might need care or go in to a home there is no point in having money in your name because the bloody council will steal it all off you by charging you for the care, they take it after you die if you have more than a certain amount of assets. I certainly wouldn't touch an annuity though, it seems like a massive con. euthanasia at 70 would be best Remember that film called Logans Run? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=4WUUnc1M0TA
WILF 47,352
Do you reckon that this thread hasn't quiet gone the way the OP wanted it to ? Yes Wilf it has!! Got people thinking and talking on here about it before spin starts! Fair play, it certainly got me thinking.........it got me thinking "leave off for f**k sake" Mate, you deserve every penny of your wages and more and I dont blame you in the least for trying too keep your benefits at the level you thought they were going to be. But, same as teachers, you joined not only a job but a vocation that has a very real impact on peoples lives.....and the bottom line is, while you are all round the brazier with your banners on strike people could be dieing. At a time when everyone is having to take a good kick up the studs why should you be any different and why should anyone die because you think you should be? You have my utmost respect and gratitude for the job you do but I just think strike action, given the job you do, is a bit selfish.
alun1960 234
I am not a union geezer, just an ordinary joe doing the vocation i chose to join and love! BUT if the Gov has no opposition to this first step in decimating a skilled profession then im afraid my friend this service is not going to be there as it was and when needed a very poor quality or dare i say it G4S! Selfish i think not, was there for any life or propety last time and if injured on my own head, we was led by a buffoon in gov pocket and hope to never go out again, but will not bend over and take it dry!

Born Hunter 17,784
The economy of this country is changing, it has too, the actions of the past have shaped its future and that future is unstoppable, final salary pensions etc are no longer affordable, these change will start at the bottom of society and eventually make its way up through society, yes it will be fought tooth and nail by each echelon of society as it moves up the social scale with each shafting the level down in an attempt to keep their goose that lays the golden egg, If young people had it drummed into them to start a pension from a fairly early age it would be a good start but of course the minute anyone who has a bit of wealth says this the bleeding heart socialists will be out crying. Start off with £1000 and contribute £100 per month with a fairly low return rate of 5% and by the time you get to 65 you'd have a reasonable £212,000 in your pension pot. Make it 150 a month and you'd end up with over £300,000. You say that Nick and it's a very fair point, but when you're young like me you're on the bottom rungs of your career ladder, buying your first house and trying to invest a little in it to make a bit and buy a bigger/better/nicer house. It's difficult to know where to draw the line. I led to believe I'm on a reasonable pension scheme but not taking maximum benefit of it due to actually wanting to live a little. I've decided I'm never going to retire, saves me worrying.

When you get to 40-50 years old you normally have reached your maximum earning potential and are not likely to earn more, it therefore is a total bitch that instead of enjoying it you end up pouring it in to a pension.
