What annoys me is the bleeding heart socialists and unions campaigning for their own little corner, which compared to the rest of the country is surprisingly well off. At the end of the day there isnt this endless money pot for public sector pensions. I work in the public sector, ive had a pay freeze and a pension change. My pension was very good, will still pretty decent, and if you compare it to what can be gotten in the private sector its unbelievable. You cant really expect the rest of the country to pay for your pension when they can hardly afford to feed there kids can you? At the end of the day if its so bad, quit, do something else. I wont quit my job because i cant get anything like it in the real world. I can imagine its the same for you guys. When you hold the countries feet over coals (ironic) about something like this you will get some resentment but you cant blame people can you?

The fire service want a 40% pay rise to 30k? :hmm:

What about the military?.... NHS workers?.... and the like? ?...

The army will have to step in...work those extra hours.... to wipe your arses....and get FOOK ALL FOR IT!

Lads, sorry but that just sounds like pure jealousy.. So the firemen have been able to secure themselves a comfortable retirement - good luck them, they should be applauded, not pilloried.. Fireman, nurse, soldier, ect. Any person who spends their working live doing one of these shitty/dangerous jobs should be suitably rewarded while doing it and at the end of it.. This whole 'they get more than the others get so they should get less' attitude is wrong though IMO..

Im not jealous at all, there comfortable retirement is at the expense of someones barely acceptable retirement, and its being fought for by so called socialists. Fireman is a great job, many many people would love to do it. Its got great pay, great hours, great pension, even after its been changed, and even more important its secure. Compare that to a bricky, an office worker or a shelf stacker. Private sector pensions just dont cut the mustard in comparison.

If firefighters are being shat on this much by pension changes then finish, vote with your feet. Get another job or just get your own private sector pension and not pay into the one your provided with. They wont though because what they will get is still a lot more that any one who doesnt work in the public sector can get. Im in the same boat, my pension is going to get changed, is it worse. Yes. Is it still decent, yes it is.

Very good if you compare the contributions you would have to make to get the same pension you would probably have to contribute 3 or 4 times as much if not more. I'd have to do the sums but there is a massive discrepancy and the main thing is a final salary pension is guaranteed income for the rest of your life and is not subject to the whims of the stock market or annuity rates etc. The reason they still gave them to the public sector is because the police/teachers/firemen/nurses were on terrible salaries and it compensated for that. Now it is a fact that all public salaries are much higher for comparable work in the private sector.

Like I said earlier the private sector need a level playing field, they're partly funding other people's pension and not able to put away enough for their own retirement.

I don't begrudge the public sector workers that actually do something but the public sector is hugely bloated and needs seriously culling. We don't need bed managers, ofsted, community liason officers and all the other crappy council jobs.

So in a nutshell when they talk about how we need immigration because of an aging population they aren't talking about all of us who will only be taking 140 a week from the state, they're talking about the giant hole in the state pensions, we need more and more money every year to fund them. I could live till I am 100 but I wont be costing the state much money but if a head teacher or doctor does it's going to be 40 or 50 grand a year till they die.

Taking of council workers, the wages the executive officers get at local councils are f***ing obscene.. My county is one of the least populated in the UK, yet we have several entries in the top 10 highest earners in the whole country when it comes to local authorities.. It boils my piss, they vote themselves inflation busting pay rises year on year with no one to hold them to account.. God knows what their final salary pensions will be, probably 5x that of a fireman..

Like Micky Finn said earlier on this thread, the people who are really deserving of criticism are the ones higher up the ladder who are hiding behind the flack that is being aimed at the public servants on the front lines.. There are a lot worse who are more deserving of being slated than the firemen, IMO..

If the army pension was half as good as a firemans I would be chuffed to fukc .........

it should at least be on a par mate, but that ain't the fault of the firemen is it?
Not saying it is mate just making a comparison ... I know exactly how the OP feels and the folk on here saying its a lifestyle thing are right and also wrong ... When people like the OP and myself joined the army fire service etc we knew what we were doing knew our pay and knew what our pension would be ... The problem he has is the government are now moving those goal posts just as they did with the army pension only difference is you can't go on strike in the army you have to swallow it ... And ironically when the firemen go on strike guess who has to step in and do their job .... Yep the army .........?

i agree 100% but after 30 years of service, when the goal posts are moved its a very bitter pill to swallow, i feel for them i really do, this government is fukced up in so many area's (cant wait untill the elections come) !

I agree a Council CEO getting more than the PM is ridiculous, but what about union bosses? Matt Wrack of the Fire Brigade Union was paid £120,174 in 2011, I bet he didnt have a pay freeze or cut.

I don't tend to worry myself too much with pensions, I'm a bit short sighted at the moment but chucking a bit in anyway. Just wondered what exactly they are offered compared to the scheme I'm on?

On your second point I agree.. I agree with the principle of a union but I'm not a fan of the way they are run and the people at the top of them..

Mate I rekon everyone in their right mind feels sympathy for fire figheters, nurses and respects them for what they do.

But to come on pissing and moaning when you still aint doing bad and other lads are working very hard for a fraction of what public sector people will get aint going to win you much sympathy.

My repsonse is, you know what you signed up for, you aint doing bad out of it and in fact better than most folk.........so dry your f***ing eyes and crack on ;)

You say you won't get paid a penny Lee, but isn't it part of your job to respond to any need your country might have for you? :hmm: I think you guys get the shitty end of the stick when it comes to pay and conditions anyway mate.. You have to take what's given and aren't allowed to stand up for yourselves the way other public sector workers can..

Fighting to keep what you have is one thing mate, but putting lives on the line because you have to pull your horns in like everyone else is quiet another IMHO........we had 13 years of a free for all and now its time to pay the bill, simple as that pal
