I use eley maximum 34g no.5 for everything, quite a big load but they are great, rabbits pigeons and ducks out to 45 yards no hassle with my aya no.4 with 24inch barrels.

I agree with this 100%.

 

I like a fast "sharp" cartridge for pigeon as they can really turn on the speed if spooked.

 

If money is an issue then there are plenty of other options but personally for a few pence more I prefer the comfort of something that requires less lead time. The again I also like White Gold for clays and that's another fast cartridge.

Tbh I think that most cartridges perform similar enough that the average shooter probably wouldn't be affected. I think it's just psychological and just having confidence in what you use

I have a 20 bore, 28, 410 and others but shoot pigeon with them

 

20bore - puregold 28gram 6s

28bore bornaghi 21gram 7s

410 eley 2 1/2 inch

iv been useing 28 grams 7/12,and get very good kill shots,some times killing birds out at 30 yards,

just got my licence but been shooting afew years with a friend we always use 28g 7 1/2s and 32g 6s.
