Targets And An Added Bonus

Recommended Posts

For the last few weeks I have been craving a good day to get out with my rifle. The past few weeks have been mobbed with work and everything that can need doing has needed doing.

The last few weeks I have been throughly researching tanning as I have always wanted to do something with the rabbit fur that I shoot. I'm planning on winterising my hunting pockets with rabbit fur for those cold days of watching from a hide and roost shooting, im planing on getting some safer solution off ronnine sunshines off ebay, as I'm not massively keen on using the battery acid way.

All through my air gunning time, I have I guess been whats known as a safe shot, I very rarely take shots further out than 30 yards and the majority of the time they are from the prone with a bipod, unless my spacial awareness happens to land me with a nice branch for a supported standing or kneeling position. Shooting does not come naturally, mainly probably because being taught in the armed forces to fire centre rifles with little instruction I have had to completely teach myself to shoot again. Back then it was all about firing as much ammo in a short space of time to "win the fire fight", however now the skill involved in setting up and shooting a well placed accurate shot with a low powered weapon accounting for wind and bullet trajectory is something I have had to spend alot of time in practising.

For the past week or so I have been determined to increase my range. So today I took all my spinners and targets to my permission and started close and worked my way back, by the end of my 2 hour session of putting pellet after pellet down range, I finished with a good bag of confidence after banging the small 12mm kill zone spinner 5 times in a row at 50 yards.

As I normally do before I leave I thought I would take a quick look around the permission, and luckily enough the only thing in sight was a nice healthy buck rabbit, confidence booming I got in position and took a nice headshot at 35 yards. Unfortunatly the main warren area on my permission is down into a small re-entrant, so I'm shooting down a minimum of 40 degrees, which plays havoc on my hold over under/ because the further up the re entrant u go the more hold over/ so this counts for alot of misses because its often quite hard to judge, this time of year my bipod gets over the long grass which adds to the hold under, however in winter when the grass is lower I shoot with my rifle rested in the same place and the hold under is different. The equates to less hold under....a trial and error(on many targets and dead leaves on the grass) which has taken me a while to get used to!

No doubt I will be back out again shortly!

All the best

Yer andy, it's just a bit of security than anything, it's not loose but there is a tiny bit play, the cylinder moves a bit and the barrel band is done up as tight as I dare, so the tape is just to keep it all cushy, ill pick an adjustable off rown sometime!

Tornado they are set on so when you shoot, they go up, then you shoot them down, there is a video on YouTube seeing how they work mate!

As for my zero, yes mate it bloody kills me, I zero at 27 yards on the flat then I have spent a good day moving 10 yards up and down the bun line working out the hold over, it still equates to a load of misses tho, it seems to be different every few yards as its so steep!

Believe it or not timmy the far side of the bank is 55 yards direct line, but it's fun putting targets down where the warren is and plunking away (not so fun running up and down to change them)

P.s I'm using .177
