They said let the pup settle in for 2 weeks before bringing it for its 1st jab. Regardless of age. Feckin stupid advice: the sooner they're jabbed the better, as long as they are in good health. Most makes of jabs are fine to give to pups as young as 6 weeks, but a good vet will, in that case, advise a booster at 3 months of age; just in case there were still too many maternal antibodies in a young pup. Waiting for a few weeks won't help a pup if it comes into contact with something like Parvo and it has insufficient antibodies to fight it. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

beast 1,884 Posted September 1, 2013 Report Share Posted September 1, 2013 when i rang to book my last pup in i was told to wait as the new pup would be under stress for a week or so and the added strain on its system of having an injection might make it a bit sick. i could see where they were coming from but didnt agree and went to naother vet. skycat 6,174 Posted September 2, 2013 Report Share Posted September 2, 2013 True Beast: they are under a bit of stress, and getting jabbed can lower their immune system and make them more prone to bugs in the environment. BUT, a well socialised puppy, that has been properly reared with a lot of human contact and as much stimulation as possible within the breeder's home, goes a long way to combat any stress the pup may be under when it goes to its new home. Pups that fall ill after getting jabbed are usually those which haven't been properly reared or socialised. 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

lurchergrrl 1,441 Posted September 2, 2013 Report Share Posted September 2, 2013 It will be in their minds to reduce stress to the pup but letting it settle in a new home .... often they have a bit of dire rear and upset tummy when they move to their new home. Stupid advice tho, all things considered. Better to have a pup vax'd than not. I rang up about getting my terrier jabbed when he was only 6 weeks old but had been taken away from his mother at 4 weeks. As we have a lot of parvo about this area and my big dogs were going out for miles and could have potentially walked the bug in on their paws, I wanted him done early. The girl on the phone said that if the big dogs had their jabs there was no risk of the puppy catching parvo Epic fail on staff training if you ask me. Quote Link to post Share on other sites
