bullx100% 681
alright lads.just been speaking to a lad about the shottys and he said that you should use one style of gun ether a sxs or o/u semi/ single. ( only one barrel is in view )is there any truth to this ?cheers Quote Link to post
TwoSmokingBarrels 11
Your sight picture will vary from using different styles of guns, so your sight plane with a over and under will be different compared to your sight picture with a sxs, you will shoot lower with a sxs. Your aim will be slightly different for the different types of shotgun aswell, Its like shooting a single barrel with no raised rib,you would be shooting low if you was used to shooting an over and under with a raised rib, Its best to stick to one type anyway! I can not get on with a sxs, just not for me, i'll stick to a semi auto and Over and under! Edited August 30, 2013 by TwoSmokingBarrels Quote Link to post
paulus 26
you can shoot anything providing you are familiar with it, combination is a personal choice not a necessity. Quote Link to post
Big bald beautiful 1,231
I shoot a sxs but have shot a semi auto at clays, it will always be easier if you stick to one. I use a £75 Spanish sxs , get the odd funny look at the clay ground. Quote Link to post
shootinforfood 18
I have been shooting a few lately to get a feel for them before I buy one. use o/u and sxs at clays and the sxs is harder to get along with after shooting the o/u. haven't shot semi so cant comment on that, but does take a bit of adjusting when you change from one to another 1 Quote Link to post
Alsone 789
Only shot one a couple of times but in my experience, Tbh, a semi's no different to an o/u in sighting. Only differences are: 1. Slightly louder - the gases exiting the ejection port are nearer your head and not travelling away - you'll never notice with hearing defenders anyway 2. Less recoil - the action reduces the recoil making them potentially better on a 2nd shot than a double barrel 3. Some people say the ejected cartridged distracts them - never noticed myself. Only time it can really is if it bounces off the clay shoot cage into your face which is very rare anyway. 90% time it misses the cage and 99% of the times it does hit it, it bounces off elsewhere. For most people its ignorable and you don't even notice the ejection after the 1st couple of shots unless it hits you square in the face. Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
Load of rubbish,I have a 16bore hammer gun in the cabinet, next to my benelli auto, and I can take that out and shoot it pretty well, as I can if I borrow my mates o/u the main thing here to note though is that all these guns fit me, get that right and it don't matter a dime what it is if you can shoot, you can shoot Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Agreed Charlie, gun fit is the most important thing. I have a cabinet which contains S/S, O/U, S/A and Single barrels, not all of them fit me perfectly so I don't shoot so well with them. My game gun is a S/S for it's lightness, my clay gun is an O/U and I would have around the same results if I swapped their roles, again they fit me. Quote Link to post
The one 8,476
As long as a gun fits you you should be able to shoot it either a single barrel ,sbs or o/u 1 Quote Link to post
bullx100% 681
ok well looks like i need some one more experianced than me to see if my guns fit properly then as with my sxs i can hit 90% of the rabbits i shoot at but pigeons....well id have more chance hiting pigeons with it if i throug it at them lol.my semi tho i am an avarage shot with my semi on pigeons Quote Link to post
alan81 110
take your gun and hold it with 2 hands then throw it up fast as if your going to shoot a rabbit and if the gun sits nice against your shoulder and your line of sight is bang on then it fits you if not it doesn't. I don't know if your tall or short, it could be that your tall and using a gun with a short stock or you could be short and using a gun with a long stock these would make a difference to also weight will make a difference atb. SportingShooter 0
Practice also makes perfect Bull All quarry moves at different speeds and requires a different sight picture, gun fit is a major plus but you still need the experience for all different types of quarry to build muscle memory.
