hi i am fairly new to falconry i use to have a harris hawk that i use to hunt with i had him from a chick i manned him myself and i had loads of fun hunting with him anyway i ended up losing my job and when i finally got a new one and i had to sell him i was heart broken but i had to sell because my new job i had to work long hours but was best thing for him but i am now working part time and as the partner is now working as well i am thinking of getting anther bird of prey

enough about my life story the questions i would like to ask are the following

i have been thinking of getting a redtail hawk would this be wise or would i be better off going back to a harris

what do you guys think to flying through the moult ?

as i might be changing to a red tail would i need to get a mentor that has had one of these birds ?

i know i probably should of had a mentor for my old harris but i couldnt find any one close enough but i dont think i done a bad job and thanks to google and youtube i trained and manned myself and i use to get good results with him and i never lost him

also i never used telementry how many of you guys used it ?

is it easy to use ?

will i need one with a redtail?

also i am gunna look to getting a bird at a bit latter date i have to build a mews yet if i get a bird that has been manned and being flown when i go to buy it will i have to reman it or can i fly it straight away

hope this dont turn it to a thread where everyone has ago at me but im just trying to gather info

thanks simon

I don't think you've got much of a clue. Actually I don't belive you flew a harris as you wouldn't of got it from a chick and had great results with a imprint not having any experience or a mentor. why don't you start your introduction again with the truth and then il give you a awnser you are looking for.

Well Of course you'd have a reason sound yourself out not to be a total newbie. But anyway a days course is a waste you need to find a seasoned falconer go out with him or her for 2 seasons ish then when youve got all your kit including telemetry then maybe if your ready get the bird that is best suited to the land and quarry you have avalible. What you have to understand is by you getting a bird with no real knowledge no telem nothing just google and YouTube to train your Harris hawk witch is a joke! People like you will get are sport banned just getting a bird with no proper understanding of falconry at all just thought o il get a hawk makes my blood boil, and it does not sit well will me anyway the sooner falconry has some sort of ledgeslation the better!

Good luck hope you do find a mentor. Where are you based

never quite get the 'lost me job so had to get rid of me birds/dogs scenario' , personaly if I where to loose my job I would simply have more time for the birds , dogs etc and being that I like to be busy I would need them more so, its not as if either costs much too keep, if I was not working I would expect them to feed themselves and maybe contribute a little towards my table as well.

When you take on either a bird or dog its usually for say around the twenty year mark with birds , lot less with dogs, but you sort of know that it will be a long commitment and in that you cannot guarentee to always be employed, married etc so it dont stand up for me, personaly sounds more like got fed up or simply cashed it in, which in either case you should not take another on, as it's likely you would do the same again fair do's if your 13 and made a mistake but once ya over 18 it comes down to lack of thought in the first place.

I think this is just a wind up guys, the fella clearly does not have a clue, and if he gets a redtail, I think he is going to get very friendly with his local A+E dept real quick, if you are not a wind up mate, then I strongly suggest you find someone local to mentor you,or you are going to end up in a mess in more ways than one.

Hi no this isn't a wind up I didn't get rid when I lost my job I got rod when I got new ones and was working long hours and Saturdays and odd Sunday and away alot to shows and I didn't have time to fly him so got rid not what I want to do but I had to for the birds sake granted a lot of u don't believe me but what I said is the truth and the results I had with my bird were good enough for me but what u have with urs maybe more but I may have a mentor I am going to meet him on Monday he has had a lot of experience so he said I can go along with him if I want so that's what I'm gunna do I still gunna do course though as already booked like I said I'm thinking about getting another bird I'm not in any hurry to get one at the moment ethier

Well fair enough mate I can understand the work thing, been there myself in a previous job and its shite, at least you have the sense to say you are not in a hurry, my advice, get out with the guy you mentioned this season and learn all you can from him, then get a bird next season, I know it seems ages away but its not, and it would give you time to get everything together inc a couple of ferrets and learn how to use them, and one last thing TELEMETRY IS A MUST, anyone who flys without it is a mug, if you cant afford it save up and buy a second hand set, good luck, you are taking the right approach finding a mentor
