I bought a book yesterday from the Bargain Bookshop chain "Glorious British Grub " by the Herbert brothers. They had a tv series where they went round to various British establishments and devised a couple dishes which was then voted for by the public.

The book was originally £20 when I came out but was £12 in tescos when I meant to get it but just under a fiver yesterday.

I bought their bread book and use that and recommend this one especially at that price. Lots of tasty local dishes that aren't expensive or to difficult

Are they purely restaurants though Stig ?......Not carverys or ex public houses.......................straightforward restaurants with traditional waiters..................dont get me wrong we have some in the west end Corrigans in Mayfair,Simpsons in the Strand,Rules etc.............all lovely food, but they are not for everyday folk out for a nice evening meal at the drop of a hat.................youd need to book a week in advance !..................English restaurants used to be very common they are not now i wouldnt think there is any town or city in in the country where English restaurants outweigh pizza huts or kebab shops/indians etc.

Kinda what I was getting at... Traditional British cuisine is on the decline. Where I'm from I can get everything but a roast dinner!

all the village pubs around here serve traditional home cooked british food, most of them are run by chefs and the pub is the side business, if i want a takeaway i have to drive to a town or larger village, The Oddfellows Arms, The Dog and Hedgehog, The Bluelion, The Gate, The George and Dragon all single pubs in local villages that do fine traditional ENGLISH food. Stig is must be different in these rural shires, where the big city breweries have not taken over :laugh::laugh:

Whats the matter with carverys? I quite enjoy a Toby carvery

Theres nothing wrong with a carvery, but what I am saying is, that's all that seems to be on offer and most of those are done badly!!

IMHO, We have a range of ingredients in this country that will give you a tasty meal to equal any Italian, Chinese or Indian but there don't seem to be anyone, other than real top end places, willing to use them and create dishes with them.

OR

Is it that, as a nation, we have become so removed from our traditional food that we don't want them?........are the chefs safe or is it the punters?

How many people eat offal in the shape of kidneys or liver any more?........tounge?......when was the last time anyone went and got a load of mussels and dropped them in a pot and had them with a nice crusty loaf?........or did a plate of grilled kidneys with black pepper and some nice mushrooms fried in butter?........what about scallops on top of a nice local bit of black pudding with creamed spinach?

All good English fair and not in the least bit boring, takes no time to prepare or cook.......its out there, but not for long if we don't buy it and eat it

One thing I will say is, the jocks are better than us English.......they do some cracking pie combinations up there and what could be nicer than an Arbroath Smokie eaten just as it is.....beats the f**k out of McDonalds.

Haymin got me a few for my journey home when I was up there and they were simply out of this world

You can buy your pies most places I would think and you wont taste the like of them anywhere else.
