thats the brits own fault, there demand for curry houses and mexicans outway the need for your traditional sunday roast. although i dont eat that food myself.im just as bad by eating fast food. having said that when i do gout for a meal its always a traditional steak pie and veg or cod and chips.

nah i dont buy that.............is it any coincidence that when i was young, probably you as well.......there was 10 traditional British restaurants to every 1 Indian or chinese.........yet today you have to look hard to find a British restaurant...............is it because Brits want kebabs, chinese etc.....no i dont think it is i think like everything else British culture is being DIScouraged and our traditions are being swallowed up in favour of foreign ideas.......i know plenty of people myself included who would rather stay in for a traditional English roast or English breakfast in preference to going out for a curry or a poncey continental breakfast........but the venues are just not out there anymore.......its not cool enough to like British food anymore.

. Great caffs in london gnasher and still some pie n mash shops

Im talking about restaurants though not cafes, pie & mash or pubs....................what ever happened to a group of English people sitting down taking their time over dinner in an English restaurant eating English food in English surroundings............without sounding all bias it seems its only East London thats managed to hold onto a bit of tradition and culture with pie & mash, jellied eels etc.....certainly within London anyway................try and get a bit of culture down the Kings Rd or The Angel and they,ve forgot what the word means.

Born Hunter says Nottingham maintains a lot of English restaurants and good on them i might have to dodge up there for a nice drop of roast one of these days.......didnt Nottingham used to be known for the statistic of having a population of 5 females to every 1 male as well...............Robin Hood land here we come :D

It went the way of the Dodo, unfortunately. Too much emphasis on working more hours, living wages dropping, and the availability of cheap nutrition-less take-away food. It's nice to see that there are some traditional British restaurants left but it's sad that Pizza Hut and Wetherspoons are the only named example of culinary excellence...

I couldn't afford to eat in Oliver's restaurant, not that I'd give the smarmy b*****d my money if I could. Personality goes a long way.

Funny enough its the men in my family that are the good cooks, my old man was, my brother is and I do too......its kind of an old fashioned thing.........when you get company, any time of the day or night, you sit them down and feed them.....its just the way it has always been.

The old man knew about wild foods and cheap cuts from having f**k all as a boy........we used to go to the deli on Roman Road every Saturday and fetch home cooked chickens, hams, toungue, pigs trotters

Whatever happened to decent delis?

The only thing I didn't like was peas pudding, he always used to try and get me to eat it and I still cant stand it to this day

That's the point, though. They're evolving. The tradition is disappearing and what we see now is a result of the market. Traditional British cuisine... err... isn't anymore.

Well you ain't allowed to drink and drive these days mate, and everybody drives everywhere these days! :D The ones that are still open are the ones that started selling grub. There's one old country pub I know called the Speculation Inn that was still open last time I went past it, right out in the middle of nowhere. There always used to be a load of bikes parked outside of when they used to have something popular on like live music or a quiz night!
