Jamie Oliver Comment

Its not just the money, its what starting a job leads to, the experience, and a work ethic. There was a young bloke on tv saying that there are few jobs about because of foreign workers. But in the next breath he says he wont take any old job, he wouldn't work in mcdonalds because that's beneath him. Not saying all like that, but in this day and age a job is a job

Go to a green grocers stall and you will freight up for a tenner, get in the butchers and you can make £30 go a pretty long way.....if you know how to cook you won't eat a bit of shit all week on 40 sovs ;)

This is what Oliver is getting at. It's miles cheaper to make your own food than buy packaged crap from the supermarket. In fact supermarkets aren't cheap at all, veg is more expensive, eggs & milk more expensive. Meat is worse quality for the same money as a good butcher. Like you say Wilf 10 quid gets you a sh*t tonne of food from a decent grocer but people are lazy and that is what the supermarket likes.

Think your wrong about milk nick,,,it's the supermarkets that keep the milk price down,,, in fact it's a disgrace really that you can get a 4 pint of milk for a quid,,,

But I agree with most of the posts,, I prefer to cook from scratch,,, I no longer bother with even cheat things like dolmio sauce or greavy granuals,,, do everything from scratch

are youth has been education education for the last 20 years the work ethic has been educated out of them. Test test exams Leading to six form leading college leading to uni , while the rest of europe educate for work we educate for further education , compare are youth to germany from school to aprentiship ares go from school to school college etc , we live in a deluded country were we think were militant go to germany were the dont need to be as employment law would not allow the overlooking of there own countymen there factorys still manafactor And produce in every town there are family business thriving employing local labour while we advertise or should i say are goverment backed departments advertise jobs plus travel plus expences to come here there is a conspiracy to import euro voters there can not be any other reason , youth unemployment is at an all time high yet they still cook the books by getting kids into part time education And not work ?????????

Our tomato sauce is actually a Jamie Oliver recipe, much nicer than the bottled stuff :)

I know what you mean about the supermarkets driving the price of milk down but we can still get it cheaper from the grocer. We hate the supermarkets though they get you in with one cheap product and then rip you off with the rest of them. Also there is something very strange about looking at fruit and veg which is all exactly the same size and shape and no blemishes or dirt on them. It's made people squeamish about a tiny mark on an apple, I've seen people throw away fruit because of the smallest thing. When I was a kid we had to eat them regardless and didn't think twice.

I know there are things that you can get which are very cheap like a pizza for a pound but people need to realise they are made from shyte and if they feed their kids on it day after day they are going to do serious damage to their health like Type 2 diabetes and obesity. And like Oliver says it is not the wealthy that are going to suffer from this so called cheap food mentality.

I actually agree with him 100%. People are saying they have no choices but I'll bet all of them have TVs, Mobile Phones etc.

The generations for the last 20 years have had the best chance to rise from low incomes to middle to high incomes though hard work and skill ,if you look at our parents and grandparents if they worked in a certain job industry your kids normally stayed in there wage bracket lifestyle for the rest of there lives.

I think Jamie comments strikes home with either alot of members or there children and they just dont like to here it ,if a kid is living at home he does not need to earn even the min wage  the early jobs in life is there to gain knowledge etc etc time managment .

Some need to get off the gravy train of blaming others for the faults in our lives .

Combine sales are booming :whistling:

some kids are luckily enough to be given a head start, family businesses etc, take my 2 lads the eldest is a fully qualified wood machinist, full 3 year apprenticeship, at the minute he works for an agency and often only gets odd days work in a week, a fair number of employers now use agency staff as it suits them better, my youngest is at college for the next 2 years and hopefully university for 3 years after that, neither is workshy, neither is highly intelligent but both can not cook or plan a food shopping, its a skill that nobody living at home thinks about until they leave home. Mr oliver should stick to cooking and out of politics we already have enough millionaire out of touch MP`s, And cookie you couldn't even find a combine let alone sell one without someone holding your hand :D

I just don't agree. People need work out what their priorities are. In the past I've given up my car and with my phone gone on to a pay as you go using an ancient phone not to mention cutting out just about every other luxury item out and I'm a so called professional. What makes anyone else any different? If I go through hard times again my motor and phone will be the first things I'll get rid of followed by anything else that costs me money. Oliver's comments aren't about poor people they're about some people who don't get much money and are not putting what they have to the best use.

People crying poverty in this country is pretty disrespectful to millions of people out there who are in real poverty, I've seen it with my own eyes working in North Africa and the Middle East. People in this country are incredibly lucky to get free NHS, housing, education and money to live on, sure it must suck balls to be on a few hundred quid a week but really that's no excuse to spend it all on phones and TV etc and then poison your kids with the cheapest sh*t they can buy.

Just because someone does have money shouldn't preclude them from having an opinion, that's the typical ne'er-do-well attitude we hear so frequently nowadays. There's plenty of people out there who are also on the poverty line but admirably make the best of it and provide for their kids the best way they can.

so lets say you live where i live, without a car you are reliant on the bus, you can not live a normal working life here if you don't drive and own a car, fact! maybe mr oliver would be better to spend his time preaching to the supermarkets and food manufacturers. after all why should say a supermarket shepherds pie be any more or less unhealthy than a home made one that has been frozen as he and you say fresh food is cheaper than supermarket food?? obesity in kids has as much to do with social changes as it has to do with food, when i was young fat people were rare, but we played out and exercised far more than todays generation, how many fat people are in the forces??how many school playing fields have been sold off, how many council owned tennis courts is there left. contrary to popular opinion poor people dont live on takeaway junk food as they can not afford it, more likely than not its the diet of the middle classes where time is at a premium :whistling:

Sure we need a car as well, my missus kept hers and I had to use a flipping bicycle for 3 years.

Oliver does preach to the supermarkets and the schools and petition the government about school dinners and has had some results. He's one of the few celebrities that actually tries to do good with his so called status.

Obesity in people is just as much down to the fact that the food industry went down the road of highly processed carb meals, full of salt and sugar. White bread and white pasta isn't far off eating spoonfuls of sugar (have a look on a diabetics website for info on that). No supermarket is going to use complex carbs in their meals because they wont taste as nice as the others so unless they makes laws about this it is entirely up to us as people to make sure our kids eat properly. The food industry is a f**king disgrace and we can all sit about saying it's not fair or we can do something about it and not buy the sh*t. It is not as hard as people think to make cheap meals, it just takes some planning and thought. Since when did a baked potato cost much money? Or buying a chicken and making soup from the carcass (plus the left overs are good for sandwiches through the week)?

So I want to be clear I'm not (and neither is Jamie Oliver) saying all poor people give their kids a bad diet but it is pretty clear that there is a big problem in this country in general. People are ignorant of how bad some of this stuff that they feed their kids really is, just because it isn't sweets or fizzy drink doesn't mean its healthy. Because we don't eat any packet food here the rare time we do we really notice how salty the food is, that's because everything in a packet is rammed full of salt and to counter the saltiness they use sugar. The brain is programmed to want salt/sugar and fat which is why so many people enjoy McDonalds.

The biggest problem is that if anyone educated dare say you shouldn't feed your kids this or that then they get blamed for being a snob and looking down on poor people.
