Eye Injury In Lurcher

Recommended Posts

feel for you GD, my eldest whippet lost the site in his right eye from a blackthorn, he kept the eye but it is good for nothing. Although, it will no doubt hinder him in the field they do adapt suprisingly well. my dog still catches well (not as good as before albeit but still pretty good). As has been said it is frustrating when they put in a good run then get blind sided by their quarry but he will adapt as will you in the way you work him. my advice would be to rest him well and then get the most you can out of him and when your out with your mates tell them his catches count for double! ;-) all the best

Thanks for the advice alex ...sorry to hear about your dog.....yours is good proof that they can learn to adapt with a bit of time..how long did you wait till you had him out runnin again ?? Cheers gravedigger

i cant, remember exact time scales but i started him back just letting him run on flat open ground and throwing a ball for him to get him used to striking and picking things up and did this until his coordination had adjusted. i slowly entered him back lamping on as open ground as i could and again slowly started introducing him to bushing again around cover and ferreting etc. now he does what he does before including woodland ferreting.

Lucky escape there gaffer ! Unfortunately mine got it in the eye itself...was checked again this mornin an the eye is totally non functional an infected so vet thinks the best course of action is to remove it completely an avoid an discomfort or further complications....so just have to take it one step at a time with him ....cheers gravedigger

shit mate, just caught up with this thread after reading first post few days ago.

Sorry to read the outcome, hope the dog will be comfortable very soon, and hopefully a bit less stress for you now that it's been sorted in some way.

Best of luck for the recovery, I'm sure he'll be back doing a job for you in the future
