Hot Meat 3,109
This is summat i have always fancied trying. And if I'm honest the wage wouldn't be an issue. Can I ask some of you pestys? Does it get too much? Doing your hobby as a job so to speak. I get a lot of bunny bashing every winter and I love it, just as much today as I did years ago. But I'd be gutted if doing it for a living ended up making me lose my keenness... as it goes I turn down a few paid jobs now and again due to the fact it's friends of landowners that are asking and I honestly wouldn't know where to start when charging folk for a service. I do get odd days paid ferreting but they are mostly big jobs that the landowners want done quicker than I intend on doing it, so if they cover my costs for the day I don't mind putting in a few extra days to keep them happy.. This is a good question,.and one that lads with a penchant towards the subject should consider. Very few pesters specialise in the control of rabbits.... For most modern pest controllers, the rabbiting side of things is a small part of the industry. To be able to earn your corn via ferreting, netting, trapping etc,..you need to work in an area where the clients will pay.. A lot of rabbit infested localities lend themselves towards large catches and super fun days out, but there's no money involved. I started off catching rabbits and it looks as though I will end my working life doing so.... It is a truism that rabbiting on a daily ( and often nightly basis) can get a wee bit gutty,...and can sometimes spoil the sporting aspect of our passion. That is why you must keep the two disciplines of great days out with like-minded enthusiasts apart from contracts, which are strictly business. This is easily seen when you take some time out,to work for a contractor during the hot summer months, maybe ferreting the motorway embankments or some other noisy, clammy, sticky old location...You will get some wages, but it will be emotional.... There is much that could be said regarding this subject,.but nothing beats giving it a go,...and then..you will know.. All the best, Phil. Edited August 28, 2013 by Phil Lloyd 1 Quote Link to post
stubby 175
lots of people see pest control as an extension to their hobby and think that it will be a good job to get into, it may work out like that for a few lucky one's, but pest control in towns (where the money is) is not rabbiting/moles/woodies etc, its fleas, bed bugs, cockroaches, midges, mice and rats, and although its still an interesting part of the job, its not country sports, I was lucky, I got into a big firm and have been contracted to london underground ever since, I go with the contract, so although the big companies have changed, I have always stayed with the contract, but shooting ferals every night, does sometimes get boring, and unlike shooting for free, in pest control you have a tonne of paperwork to do on each and every job, even for culling 1 or 2 silly pigeons, so what could be done in 5 minutes, turns into an hour, no fun at 4am when its raining and you just want to get home also as matt the rat has said, they look at your writing, as you'll be filling in customer treatment reports, therefore drop the text talk now and start using proper words so that if and when a job comes along, your writing correctly. 1 Quote Link to post
