Squatters

Recommended Posts

Who else has this happened too, your out lamping , getting a few long slips, then in the distance you spot a rabbit, and he stays, so as your approaching the rabbit

say fifty yards away he squats, and this is normally in grass of say 3 to 6 inches

that im on about, so you keep the lamp on the spot where he squats, only to find

when you get there its not there, obviously this dont happen all the time, but

when it does happen, aint it a head scratcher, you look about to where he squatted

shining the lamp in close proximity to where he was, and its as if its just vanished into thin air,

Clever little sods...

he as slinked off, it can happen with long slips sometimes. But if your dog good with squatters, he should run the full lenght of the beam when you 1st pick the rabbit out .And take it out with any distance, so this prob (wont happen).? it really comes down to training, the dog got to run to the end of the light, not just because it sees movment in lamp.

long slips at squatters can lead to loss of teeth  i have lamped some very rabbity looking rocks and even a coke can in disguise :laugh::laugh:

Years ago i took a friend out lamping with my Whippet X Bedlington, he had never been before.

He put the lamp on a boulder, thinking it was a rabbit, she ran down the beam and struck, and broke the top of one of her canines :icon_eek: .

it happens regular, its always best to walk up a squatter as sometimes the dog wont even see it due to the dogs height

Aye I remember slipping my big Beddy x on a rabbit well over 100 yards she was just clicking to the lamping game was very impressed with the way she was sailing out the beam the rabbit and the rock was about 6 feet apart couple inch of grass in a silage field big smile on my face and she struck the rock lol she still caught the rabbit but f**k me I could hardly hold the lamp.

Wouldn't be the first time I've slipped a dog on a tuft on grass or a woodcock on a windy night either lol strange how the wind in your eyes and darkness plays tricks with your eyes.

little owls are the bane of my life

what i meant jim, was as you lamp and you pick your rabbit out say 50 yds, then send the dog out towards there. But as you still look your self you think the rabbit moved, well the dog would be very close to where its just been.So it would get the sent prob with in secs and nail it there. So if the didnt run full lenght of the beam , it would'nt get any where near the rabbit in the 1st place, if you see what i mean lol Like when we sent Snipe or Bryn down the beam most times the rabbit still in veiw to the dogs, but few times it would have moved a bit, and as Snipe +Bryn new the game they would locate the rabbit the last few feet then nail it.

Ive also slipped on what i thought was a rabbit at distance and the dog

must think he should of gone to spec savers, because we have all done this

one as well, but now the dog, is scratching his head, because 99% of the

slips that we slip our dogs on, there is actually a bunny for the dog to chase

but just picture that moment, when this has happened on the odd occasion to

your dog, and there heads are, left right, left right. But all in all, lamping, is

a great fieldsport, im getting very itchy feet, may the wind blow hard this

season, GET ON, AND GET TO HIM.............
