bird 9,968
we had a bull mastiff rescue. we got it as a biter, but wanted it to guard our yard. locked up in the day loose at night. that dog was great with all our other dogs from the word go, never botherd the hens or ferrets..big softie really. the yard at the top had a pair of rottis. the day we got the mastiff the dog rotti came to see what was new. hackles up and forward like. it got dropped in seconds. that bull mastiff had to get pts. one weekend my mate was sitting with it, givin it a fuss and his mum turned up to walk her dog around the area. she had met the dog many times before, but the dog heard her coming before my mate did and set on her, tore into her face. had bullmastiffs and bred them in the 80s, so i know the breed quite well. But of all the bull breeds, i think they are the most unpredictable of the lot, grew up with staffs and pits you knew where you where with them, the ebt was bit like bullmastiffs i found.Had big male was great for 3 years, was ok with me, but 1 day he started to get funny with kids+small people ,and could never trust him.Went to many a show where all bullmastiffs were, they just laying down, when 1 must have looked at another dog, then Bang they all kicked off, and bloody hell tring to stop -120lb dogs fighting was a nightmare .But i still think as guard dog a gsd or bel mal, are a better choise ,as they will let you know who about, alot quicker than any bullmastiff or mastiff, and a 80lb gsd or bel mal will stop any man. but nothing will stop a (gun) 1 Quote Link to post

crowsnest 55
I had a Anatolian karabash his sire and dam were Turkish imports, a very good guard dog good with kids and my other dogs but you couldn't let him off when you took him out, he wouldn't run off but he would always be on the lookout for something that might harm us and like dogmagic's dog that came roughly from the same region he could spot something at a fair distance and then he would go and see if it was a threat, 1 Quote Link to post

fireman 10,940
That is some beast mate, never heard of this breed before. I've got a Beddie bitch that has the run of the yard, she's as good as anything and by fcuk can she bite to the bone, I know from experience. Heres my lad. He is a Yoruk, a livestock guardian breed from the middle east. In afganistan etc they protect herds of goats against wolves and bears. He loves us and the lurchers and even the ferrets but goes apeshit whenever someone (or something) approaches the property. Heres a couple of videos of the breed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNlQe2Iq-NI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvRCfdWvNuk jesus! i'm not coming round yours for tea! He is only maximum of 8 months old in those pics too! Lol! He is intelligent though, he can recognise a true as opposed to a pretend threat and react accordingly. He spots people/ dogs from miles away and just watches them, if they get to close he keeps an eye on them and may even follow them for a bit to make sure they are going but he wont show any aggression unless its needed. And even then it would only be a low rumbling growl. You don't so much hear his growls as feel them But that said, he is fine with friends when they come round and even strangers as long as they are with me. Your description there is the same as if i were desribing all the ACD's and ACD x's i've seen as it goes, well maybe not feel the growl but when they do growl you know they ain't fecking about.
