My First Jay

Recommended Posts

I live in the North East but Jay's are quite rare here can't remember the last time I even saw one! Is there a lot of them where you are? Are they a pest? Apparently they are accountable for 40% of all new Oak trees in the UK!

That HW100 is looking tempting Skot, think I may have to scrape some pennies together.

You will need to scrape quite a few lad. but it will be worth every penny!

As always, thinking of saving up about a grand and getting a decent HW100 set up :) (inc divers bottle)

That's true, well done on the jay Skot but please leave a pair to breed!

Jays probably do more good than harm by planting acorns and then forgetting where they put them so I reckon that makes up for the eggs and nestlings they steal. There is another bird that also steals eggs and nestlings and also does far more tree damage than the jay but for some reason it's protected, our good old spotted woodpecker!

I don't really think of jays as a pest in our area, rarely see or hear them so I leave them in peace. I hope you saved the pin feathers and put in your hat!

Them little blue ones? I did actually put one in my hat :D

I like watching the woodpeckers actually when I see them, didn't realise they were nest robbers aswell though?!

learn something new everyday

Skot mate i'm of the opinion that a couple of other members have and that is "never seen enough on my perm". They as well as Hares are two things that i never shoot, at the end of the day it comes down to each of us if we pull the trigger or not and for me it's a NO.

Fair play Roger, and everyone else. as you say its upto us to choose if we shoot something or leave it be.

I probably wont shoot any more Jays, unless I start seing quite a few.

hopefully some squirrels will make an appearance today

there aren't many Hares by me, seen one on my permission, as it was bolting out of the undergrowth at a rate of knots!

cheers SKoT
