.22 Rims Ire Ammunition

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have been told that .17 is a safer round than the .22 due to its ability to disintegrate on impact of just about anything therefore there is little risk of ricochet. Firstly am I right in thinking this is because the bullets are ballistic tipped and secondly is there a .22 bullet on the market that shares the same safer qualities as the .17 round

Cheers for your time

The short answer is both rounds can bounce so do not rely on the hmr pill to fragment on impact. Hmr rounds are harder to hear ricochet imo due to the noise in the shooter's ear. There are segmented .22lr rounds which are supposed to break into three pieces on impact. Not used them myself so I won't comment on them.

segmented 22 rounds are pants, hmr can and will ricochet the key is a safe backstop, although a 22 ricochet is noisy the energy retained is quite low.

A .22lr sub is in the order of 100ft lb, a HMR is in the order of 245ft lb, how do you define safety?

Perhaps it's just me but I am sick to death of this HMR ammo is safer than .22lr malarkey. We have been using .22lr for around 125years, it is the most popular civil calibre in the world, show me the graveyard full of shooters bodies from this dangerous ammo!

How about we step that up, where do we stop, Hornet .223, .243, .308. etc...V-Max type ammo available for them all, and a lot of other calibres too, so is a .223, etc., safer than a HMR then?

ATB!

.17HMR is safer than .22LR from a ricochet pov but no round is immune to ricochet.

The ballistic tip is only 1/2 the story, it's also down to the velocity - the hmr is a much faster round.

There is no .22 round on the market that shares the abilities of the .17 to fragment simply because .22 doesn't have enough velocity to cause the heavier bullet to break apart. That said, there's no guarantee that a .17 HMR will fragment correctly and not richoet.

As Deker / Paulis say, always assume ricochets will happen and always use a safe backstop. Its the only way to shoot safely. All rounds of all calibres are potentially dangerous. But the real danger comes from the shooter.
