First Nights Out On New Permission :-)

Recommended Posts

Last night I experienced my first night out on new permission and got my first rabbits with new gun, the lad I went with who is looking at passing his permissions over was brilliant and showed me loads within the 3 hours we were out, letting me take majority of shots.

I arrived at 21:30 and wow could not believe my eyes soon as I turned lamp on and checked side of hedge there was 3 or 4 sat approx 30 yards away, I got that excited and rushed shot missing and they all run off, lesson learnt....

I continued further down path and spotted another few under a tree approx 40 yards so got onto my knee and took my time with shot, how happy was I when it connected and the rabbit just pounced up and straight out cold, I then contiuned and got a further 4.

I was scaring alot of rabbits off with my lamp without the filter, I did have red filter but it wasn't even going past 20yards so need to look at different colour filter, or a better quality lamp, the guy I was with had a very good one so ended up using his and was picking rabbits eyes out at easy over 150yards but with him having .22RM he needed it, not that my HW100 would even get past 45yards for clean shot.

I was amazed at the amount of land he's got permission on, we started 2 mins out of our village and visited 4 different permissions, last night was just to give me the feel for land, he wasn't happy with weather conditions and said he wouldn't usually of gone out due to it being to calm + full moon blasting, he said he'll call me when it's windy and raining (brilliant haha).

I did struggle with the gutting, which sort of made me question if i'd be ok on my own but i'm sure after a few goes i'll get into it, he made it look so simple, just cut from ribcage down opened it up, held both front and rear legs and through all guts onto side, also I got one rabbit withn a clean head shot and it was still moving on floor, he talked me through what to do but didn't feel right, sure after a few more times my confidence will grow.

Another thing I need to invest in is a silencer, my HW100 FSB is very quiet but last night it was louder than the .22LR, still not massive problem but be worth while.

Today I'm going to prepare and looks like my first rabbit stew, overall very happy just need to master the gutting.
