Someone once posted the quote from some Christian that "there are no atheists in foxholes", to which I replied along the lines that being under fire in a hole in the ground is hardly conducive to rational thought. What is it with Man's incessant need to find 'a deeper meaning' to fecking everything? All these spiritual folks keep telling me that it's naive to believe that we are not here for a reason and that there's a meaning to our lives and the universe............ WHY? Why must there be? Simply because it makes us all feel good and content that we actually matter............... Well here's the bottom line, we don't matter a shite, the universe won't miss us when we are star dust and there is no 'meaning' to all this. It just 'is' and always will be.

 

That's my take on all this anyway.

I was talking to a south african mate of mine who was really religious until I kept on asking him why he believes what he believes and telling him how crazy he sounds, he replied because my mum said its true so as her child I believed her. But of course I could be wrong....... I could be wrong about anything and everything, but here's my logic;

 

"Prove I'm wrong"......... Isn't that the sole argument for these things, god, meaning to life etc etc. When an argument is based on "prove me wrong" it's pretty fecking desperate. Prove to me that you don't have an invisable and undetectable pixie in your head that controls your every thought, you cant so there must be! Never mind all the science, it's a fecking pixie because you can't prove me wrong.

 

There is nothing to suggest that pixie exists so why even consider it?

 

There is no reason to believe life has any deeper meaning than the obvious yet we believe it does because nobody can prove it doesn't? So suppose logically there is no reason, why the need for humans to have a reason? Simply because it's comforting! We believe it because we feel more content in a world where there's more than born - live - die - eternity.

 

Now for my money, that's a lot more believable than any supernatural explanation. Prove me wrong.......

Yeah in a desperate situation I have 'prayed' to the universe or my own 'god' or whatever, I knew it was just my own desperation and weakness as a human in a hard situation and nobody was listening to my 'prayers'. I wasn't praying to a greater being, just dealing with emotion. But that just adds weight to my hypothesis, not to yours. Finding God is solely a function of the human condition for the reasons I have given. We need the concept of a God/spirituality, yet there is no proof for such a being or any objective reason to believe in one.

It was just a generalisation really, as you say I've never needed 'God', but I have hoped and prayed for a favourable fate. Completely irrational behaviour but hope keeps ya head straight in hard times. Those that believe in a greater being would certainly have 'hoped' that he/it would have given them a favourable fate. My 'greater being' is simply fate and the universe................ and that's my spirituality right there.
