CraigRVenner 1
best spade I ever used was an old ladies digging spade it had a narrower blade not as heavy and the handle snapped at the bolt so I refitted with a thick long bush handle served me well Quote Link to post
rob190364 2,594
Minimum...... FERRET... And either.... 1. A FEW NETS.. or 2. A DOG CAPABLE OF CATCHING BOLTERS.... OR ATLEAST SOMETHING THAT GIVES YOU PLEASURE WATCHING TRY.... numbers are irrelevant.... More gear than the above.... is either to aid you....or increase catch numbers..... Its as simple as that Exactly! nets not essential if your dog can catch rabbits. You can also do without locator and spade if you're not in a rush and stick to small warrens If your dog isn't quick enough to catch bolters then I would say essential would be ferret, box or bag for ferret and a handful of purse nets....you'd be limited, but you'd catch Quote Link to post
gnipper 6,485
Pocket full of purse nets and a ferret in the other is the minimum you need but personally I wouldn't go without a locator and spade. I can't see why anyone would rather sit it out for hours than do what could be a 30 second dig, there's not much daylight in the ferreting season so why waste it sat on the box? 1 Quote Link to post
Country Joe 1,411
A lot depends on what ground you are ferreting, i have ground were letting a dog catch with no nets, you would not have many rabbits, also there are places where a few stop nets will not work, and others where they will be handy. So really you take to your ground what will work best. Quote Link to post

I wouldn't either now, but a locator and spade would be over a ton even for a second hand one....if a young lad with no money wanted to give it a go then it's not essential. 2 Quote Link to post
B.P.R 2,798
Nobody can argue the minimum youd need.... would be what i stated previously..... Plus a ferret box... ANYTHING ELSE.... is to aid you.... or increse numbers.... A locator is both to aid you and increase the catch numbers..... Spades.... T bars.... longnets....and so on.... All extra kit to help you.... Good to have them.... but anything other than ferret and nets/or dog..... is more than the 'bare minimum'..... And as the questions is whats the 'bare minimum'..... Then thats all thats essential Quote Link to post

Stevie E 66
Oldham Lad what i do and probably quite a few more is let the young ferrets grow for the first season and get them out at the end of the season just to run through a few empty rabbit warrens after the older experienced ferrets have been in and shifted the rabbits on because ,the last thing you really want is a really young inexperienced ferret is to get a good few kicks of a big buck rabbit held up in a stop end esp when its nowhere near physically and mentally up for it .Has for the minimum you,ll get to know the ground ,warrens and how deep etc and you,ll be able to judge roughly how many nets and what equipment to carry with you, wether it be longnets only ,pursenets only or a mixture of both, all the gear comes with time 1 Quote Link to post
