Gaz_1989 9,539
Is he mentally ill? Is having flashbacks and going off the rails when pissed up considered mentally ill? I like a drink and I've been in some f***ing bad ways. Now couple that with the kind of shit he has had to see and do at war? He hasn't gone out and raped a load of kids. He hasn't murdered an old lady. HE POINTED A TOY GUN OUT OF HIS WINDOW AT POLICE. 2 years in prison? Rediculous. He needs a bit of help and rehabilitation. Help finding a steady job and settle back into civilian life. But no. Jail the c**t. Then release him to do something similar or worse.

dare 1,103
He gets time inside amongst scum meanwhile anjem walks the streets preaching hate. How are they both related? No wonder the country is f****d. The bloke was willing to risk his life for us and clearly is affected by his time in the army. f***ing hate preaching scum are free and our tax money that's not giving our mps a better life is paying for such scum to live here...it gets better when it's not being spent on these, we're locking up the mentality ill who have simply been used and spat out. unlacedgecko 1,466
Recruits recieve psychometric (sp?) testing at recruit selection centres. May soldiers are discharged before going on their first tour for being psychiatrically unsuitable for military service. Plenty of screening before they get anywhere near the desert. The rise in illness is due in part to the nature of the conflict, counter insurgency is generally viewed to be more difficult and psychologically stressful than general warfare (for a historical perspective read about German troops in Ww2 facing partisans in Eastern Europe). For most of the Afghan conflict British troop numbers have stood at 10,000. Approximately 3,000 of these will have been regularly on patrol outside of Bastion, on the ground. There people will have rotated every 6 months. These factors, together with a heightened awareness (thanks to people like Combat Stress) of veterans mental health issues may partially explain the apparent rise in mentally ill ex servicemen.
