foxtails 272
has a bird got to be a certain weight before it fly ? or somthing like that ? whats that all about ? Quote Link to post
youcanthide...BANG 1,051
Yes bud, you have flying weights, hunting weight and fat weight, currently most birds are at fat weight in order to achieve a clean moult (replacing damaged feathers that happened last season) then around now the birds need to be retrained and brought back down to flying weight Quote Link to post

killer catch 18
shes a harris hawk, she was already working when i got her so iv never had to train one up before. shes free lofting at the moment, would i be best of to tether her up so its easier to handle her on a daily basis again. thanks for the reply Quote Link to post
youcanthide...BANG 1,051
Yes mate thats what i do, as soon as i begin training mine again i tether him down, just easier to get him as when freelofted he tends just to fly from perch to perch without letting me get him lol Quote Link to post
arcticgun 4,548
you should find a mentor mate, make things much less stressful for yourself and the bird, I like mine teathered whilst manning but will free loft once he is back in the swing of things, I will free loft my new harris male once he is trained and working , never moult a bird again on block or bow, free lofting all the way from now on for me Quote Link to post
killer catch 18
thanks for the advise Quote Link to post
Bone42 41
Too soon I'd say. Leave it a month or so then reduce the rations over a week or two till she comes to the fist for food in the mews.. When she does creance on and off you go. Had my male flying free again in 3 days this way last year. Quote Link to post
