Guest FOXDOG
What age would you expect a dog to show interest in things that bite back? My mate has a bitch that is 14 months, we have walked her up to my dog and a fox and let her see, then left her go and she didnt do anything just walked around She has seen my dog with one a few times now but no interest and yesterday while ot for a walk she chased a cat and when the cat stopped running she started barking Now obviously he isnt expecting anything serious from her at this age but he would like to see some sort of go in her. Her mother was a good rabbit dog and the father was a massive Deer/Grey that I recently found out was useless Although dogs from the sires litter worked. So come on folks what age would you expect a dog too show some interest Quote Link to post

allgame 0
14 months is well and truly old enough the trick is to get it to chase a fox with a dog it trusts and can handle it on its own they're running dogs so if they c somthing running theyll go catch it if it stops they wont no what to do until they get a bit more experience as soon as my dog can jump in and out of the ute then its old enough to be put on a fox and it will ethier be a good dog from day one or s**t house and u should trade it in for somthing else what bred is it Quote Link to post

Yes, its called a BRAIN! I sincerely hope that all the youngsters bringing on dogs don't believe this sh*te: I've had dogs of 1 year old who have shown no interest in a fox at all: give them another 6 months or so and they are taking them in fine style. If a pup gets a bite off a fox at an early age (ie 5 months) it is more likely to put the dog off than wed it to that particular quarry. IMO it is far better to get the dog used to taking game that doesn't bite back first and let it get handy in the field. THEN introduce is to other stuff: best to let a young dog watch an experienced dog a few times: dogs learn from watching older pack members do the business. One of the best ever fox dogs I had wouldn't touch them at an early age, then from 18 months onwards she never lost one. I've had others do it very early and sour if they get too much stick early on, and I've had others that were just plain fox mad from day one. A lot depends on the breeding, but just as much depends on the entering in most cases. Quote Link to post

marko 30
Yes, its called a BRAIN! quote very good lmao some dogs obviously take longer than others and i always say perseverance is the key however the dog still has to have something about it to have a go 14mths is to some people a bit young some start them on fox in there second season when they have other quarry under there belt so you have plenty of time yet dont rush it. People who just toss them away as useless without making an effort ought not to have them in the first place. Quote Link to post

Guest FOXDOG
People seem to think that get a rescue dog treat the dog well and it will do anything i.e. kill foxes etc. Now anyone with a bit of hunting behind them will know that not every dog will kill a fox and it is even rarer to get a dog that will do a few in a night 3/4 times a week Now dont get me wrong my dogs are wanting for nothing but please dont try and say every dog will do them because they wont Quote Link to post
Guest FOXDOG
Take your time with the dog let it run with another dog on one,it might click and have a go it might not.Single handed foxing lurchers aint as common as people think keep at it you might get lucky and end up with a fox taking lurcher, Thanks mate as I have said it aint my bitch but it has been run with my dog a few times Your right some people seem to think single handed fox dogs are easy to come by Quote Link to post
Guest JDF
i've seen a fair few single handed dogs over the years, the best of them, the ones that still relished the task when into their teens where the dogs that weren't rushed into it at the start. let the dog set the pace.they won't all make the grade but such is life.
