Feral Ferret

Recommended Posts

Ok so I gotta call on Thursday from a women in my village to say she has a ferret living under her shed but its making night time forays into her house via the cat flap demolished the cats grub then mooch about but he bit her boy when he thought it was the cat.

I've picked up 3 others up that have been found in the same area about a couple of months ago 1 I rehomed a big hob and the Jill's are still with me all white albinos.

So I go to her house not expecting to see anything but found fresh droppings and a pair of pink eyes staring back at me from under the shed bedded down in the lining under there!!!!!

Not looking for a ferret on the nose I asked for some cat food and put the tin next to the hole and he was out in a flash but all the shed surround was gravel and as soon as I moved he was back in so a quick grab was out of the question but the lady who called said she had a trap but he's far to clever to go in(not the fact they baited with cheese and biscuit haha) so set the trap now baited with cat food but a cover over it and said call me in the morning.

7am a call to say he was trapped so popped round to find a very sorry looking large albino hob covered in big ticks curled up in the trap,I'm assuming he's one of the lot that was turfed out/escaped that I've picked up a while back but liking my fingers I assumed he was feral emptied the trap in my box and off home.

I put him in my spare hutch with a load of ferret food and water and didn't see him the rest of the day as I plucked up the courage to pick him up as I wanted the ticks off of him and look him over but taking a bite off this lad would smart some he has a head like a rugby ball!!!! So bollox to it I wait till he's feeding and grab him.........nothing just nothing........result he lets me get all the ticks off him counting over 30 vile bloody things but he's still happy being held while my mrs was waiting for the screams as he latches on to me but never happened but he had a nip when I looked at his mouth but all good apart from a face full of rat bites? And covered in lice!!!

So I have some questions to you guys, would you bath first then give lice treatment?

How do I treat the rat bites same as a dog and what's the symptoms of leprosis?

Do you think this guy will make a good worker?

Cheers for reading my drivel bored shitless on Sunday night :)

Nice to see somebody taking time to help him out ,When no rub him over with frontline save the bath and should work for lice ?., For rat bites wash with a weak antiseptic wash ,dont know . If hes been living wild he should make a good worker unless hes been stealing cat food all the time

My vet keeps giving my number out to help but its all good as I've had a few good jobs out of it ;)

A pal has just dropped some fresh rabbits over as he wasn't to made up with ferret food and was much livelier getting stuck into that!!!

I guess just plenty of handling and frontline should sort him but he's pretty slow atm which is why I asked about leprosis or he's just weak???

Thanks for the replies guys.

welldone mate  id give him a good bath, you should be able to get rid of most of the lice that way, then use spot on or frontline, and like said an antiseptic wash for the rat bites, feed the bugger up and i recon hed make a decent little worker  atb mate

Don't pay consultation fees already for the dogs so I'm doing ok out of it and make a few quid on the pet ferrets using my vac hob rather than jabbing them.

Just never dealt with lice before on ferrets and bathing him might get exciting haha
