ferretman89 68
Hi all, I have a pure whippet that is just over 15months. He's as you would expect very nice natured and looks like he will make a good ferreting dog like I wanted. The only problem I have is that he has been attacked 3 times by dogs off their leads and one attack ended up with me having a £190 vet bill :/ I took him to lowther and he is just so scared of other dogs it seems. My girlfriend took him in the ring and you would think he was beaten all the time. Just cowering and not a spring in his step. On his own he is fine, bouncy playful Ect but just need to sort him out with other dogs. I was thinking of getting a bedlington whippet next year and was thinking that might sort him out or do you lot think its too late?? Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Just get him round STEADY good natured dogs mate. ASAP. He will soon come round. Try get a mate come round for the day and spend the day in the garden. Any nice natured dog. Start off with something smaller than him and work up bigger. He needs to learn to trust dogs again. How have you let him get attacked 3 times in 12 months though? That's a hell of a lot. 1 Quote Link to post
ferretman89 68
Cheers mate will have to try find somebody who has a nice natured dog. No fault of mine mate. Just had him out walking where I live on the lead and the first time the dog ran over and ripped his side open. Then a few months later the same dog again off the lead went for him but I managed to pick him up out the way. Then the 3rd time an Alsaition off the lead chased him so I just slipped him and he ran away. Nothing I could do as mine was on the lead, just other people been inconsiderate :/ Quote Link to post
arcticgun 4,548
he needs to be around a stable pack of dogs to rebuild his confidence, let them roam for miles together, he soon get his confidence back, at worst take himout with another quite dog for a walk, something with a passive nature and build it from their, your own composure also dictates how the dog will react, if you are afraid or tense it will transmit through the lead and body language, so you need to be assertive and not panic as well, I find timid dogs especially lurcher types are best off the lead as much as possible, that way they can meet other dogs and retain the ability to give it legs if needed lol good luck with it mate, Quote Link to post
ferretman89 68
Thanks mate. There is a fella where I live with a whippet and a saluki will give him a nock and see if I can pop them out for a walk and have them in my garden a couple times a week or something. Actually raging that this has made him like that as like I say no fault of mine just other stupid dogs attacking him :/ My brother has a beagle but I think that might just chase him lol Quote Link to post

neems 2,406
Build him up slowly and carry a big stick. Mines been attacked a lot too, just don't let any strange dogs get near him. I always let mine off lead if I can,no other dogs can catch him if he runs away. 1 Quote Link to post

ferretman89 68
Just a quick one. There is a dog agility/behaviour class near me. Think it's worth seeing if they can help? Quote Link to post

It'll do the dog good to even be around quiet well behaved dogs, unless it really is a complete bag of nerves and even that is too much. Quote Link to post
