Why do ferrets have big teeth because there carnivores they would eat meat in the wild we only feed dry for the convenience of the owner not because its best for the ferret

If they're being fed crap, why dont you take them and give them a better home?

Not all is lost, if you come across a good source of working strain kits, that have not been fed as they should, cat food etc, and this should not be happening, you can still take them and pump as muc

My dad and mate have a good line bred down from a hob he had put over a wild polecat jill. The offspring were crazy, but bred down twice more and they were the best workers I've ever seen. I don't think they've bred any this year as couldn't get rid of them last year. regarding diet, not many people take much care with their ferrets diet as say their dogs diet for some reason. Dont know what you call good diet but we have always fed, rabbit, pigeon, pheasant, crow, deers head, but we do a lot of shooting.

Thats good to know i just thought that the first 10 weeks are the most important cat food feed kits will pay later on in life :cray:.Maybe Heed is right so many breeders were stuck with there ferrets they just did not bother doing anymore. After 3 month i finilly got 1 from a forum member which i pic up next week :toast: But still looking for 1 more :bye:

Why should he? i would walk away as well . if your going to bred any animal's you should be prepared for it and give any young the best of grub thats when they do there most growing and development and to stint them while there young they might never recover . Maybe im just a critic but i saw a advert on gum tree and there getting fed on a tin of cat food and a bowl full of milk and hes asking a tenner a kit i hope he gets left with the lot

they feed them shite because think they are not going to get the money back for the ferrets.

If your feed them propper stuff theres no money to be made from breeding ferrets. Too many unwanted ones anyway

i cant understand folk.

It's simple, don't breed ferrets if your not going to keep them properly and have some people lined up for some so your not stuck if you have a large litter with only a few left to sell if you do. I've had my own strain of ferrets going for 6 years now and have at least a litter of kits a year and I don't do it to make money, if you earn a bit to go towards the ferrets upkeep it's great but I do it because I love having the kits, handling them and seeing them go off to their new homes or even staying with me and progressing into great little workers.

BB if the kits are being fed crap IMHO the parents are also going to be fed this same crap Why? If the parents are working (as claimed) flesh should nt be a problem to get hold of all year round

Hunting is instinctive behaviour, not innate behaviour. Ergo, if you are picking up kits, diet should not affect your hunting with them in theory. I understand there are other elements to it, but I would also like to point out that my ferrets are from a hunting background, and are effective and brilliant workers, but because I don't shoot or lamp as much as I would like, they sometimes get dry ferret food, not fresh meat. Especially in the summer, and with my time constraints, I can leave them for the odd day without having to worry about flies, and only need to check on them once or twice briefly. Basing a ferrets capability on it's diet is a little harsh, considering it may be the owner who is incompetent in looking after the animal... People have different methods, and if you think yours is the best, then you would take the kits on and pump them full of meat in order to get them to be better workers...

Couldn't agree more.

I had a good season last year. But only got 2 smallish freezers so gave alot away and my litter of kits wiped me out with feeding the mothers up before hand etc.

Freezer is currently empty except a few bits of minded meat for the dogs and a load of pork for me!

So ferrets are getting dry food at the minute. You shouldn't let that put you off wanting one of my ferrets though surely?

No mate to be blunt lol. Get rid of the winalot. If its for kits depending on how old they are, get cheap frozen value mince. As its frozen you can just pour out what you need and obviously leave it a bit to defrost. Also chicken thighs, wings are really cheap once taken out of the box and cut up just put them into sandwich bags and freeze dont take much room up at all. I cut wings into 3 with secateurs for my adults.

I wouldnt put meat in all day. See what they eat and just make up bags of chicken, mince for em for each day and leave in the fridge through day.
