wild rover 548
In my opinion 4/5 by then they have had 2/3 good seasons work, ran hard and gained experience, I try to work them often and as much as I can in their first two seasons, this is the time they need to see plenty, gain fieldcraft and learn the score prey and running wise. Once a dog reaches 7, if it has been worked hard all its life generally it takes its toll, either pace, injury, stamina starts to decline, yes still good workers and a lot to offer but past their peak, my old lad is 13 in January and is out every morning, if they put something up, hes second to it and usually tires after 2/3, now he is happy to be out and let the youngster (4) do the hard graft. salukixgrey 779
Well, with age comes experience..yes the speed may be blunted but with my lamp dogs, the biggest hauls of gear they caught each and everyone of them amassed their "personal bests" at seven years of age..I suppose a lot depends on the type of blood in the dog but that's just my own personal experience with lamping dogs.. dead right there Fuji they might slow a bit but with the age against them they use there brain and field craft they have learned over the years. make a catch with there mind more than physical attributes. no were to be at right time, were quarry heading ect. all comes with exspirience 1 Quote Link to post
