Sirius 1,391
this is probably gonna throw the proverbial cat amongst it but.........hancock has successfully been doing it for decades with 3 breeds (greyhound, beardie and border), he has 1st x's, 2nd x's, 3/8 one way, 3/8 the other, reverse 3/4, 7/16 x 9/16th just about every permeation, guys are breeding his dogs together and producing dogs that both look and act like lurchers and have been bred from lurchers Without turning this into a hancock thread. We are talking breeding from dogs which are tested or at least worked to a standard the breeder wants, more than likely excluding the the F1 parents that'll be under...........'guys are breeding his dogs together and producing dogs that both look and act like lurchers', there are guys that work his dogs The thread is about people breeding with a type in mind and doing it from scratch.. Sourcing the correct ingredients and breeding by sorting the wheat from the chaff until the correct outcome is hopefully attained or not. I doubt 'Mr H' is breeding with this wholeheartedly in mind. As for lads starting with two of his F1 as a baseline, they are kind of cheating by skipping the first step Disclaimer ( The words above are not to imply or state that hancocks dogs cannot be good or are inferior in anyway) Edited August 8, 2013 by Sirius 1 Quote Link to post
sandymere 8,263
The good thing about breeding greyhounds i suppose is there at least a lot of data to go by and not just exaggerated stories of performance. Do you think that in reality there are very few good breeders of Greyhounds and who know and have access to the right lines?I suppose also the diffrence in open class and a grader isnt that great and a lot is in the fine detail with a Greyhound, whereas variables in a family of say rabbiting lurchers might even be useful when being kept has a team. As you say there is little between a grader and an open class grey when seen in the light of how that difference would impact on a lurcher. As to variance in lurchers it brings in what people want/call a lurcher. What i would want compared to say the "first cross Heeler/ Greyhound, to a first cross Collie/Greyhound" that PH prefers would be very different but it's always horses for courses. If I were to breed a line it would be racy but with a little strength, others would go for what they need be it brains, stamina etc. Pretty much any racer that completed a career on the track would be a good start as it would bring speed, powerful heart and general exceptional physicality to which a breeder could add/take away with what traits/breeds they were interested in. birddog 1,354
does hancock breed and his customers test, the goog ones getting bred from? we are told when creating a strain or type its a numbers game, are his customers merely paying for the priveledge? has he not been ruthless, culling inferior stock not worth breeding from (i'm thinking about some of the proposed studs that were never used or used and found wanting) ? Gaz_1989 9,539
I don't get why anyone would want or need to do this? Say you've got in mind what you want the end result to be. Why not take 2 dogs that are similar to what you've got in mind. Doing what you've got in mind and breed them? Unless I'm missing the point? Why start from scratch? I like water. Bottled water. I aren't going to start collecting rain water and sterilising it myself and bottling it in the hope of achieving bottled water similar to what's at tesco. I guess you could argue sense of achievement doing it yourself? Maybe? Quote Link to post

Unless you have an ACCURATE history of the 2 dogs breeding, even if they looked identical, the litter could be produce anything from 21 inch smooth coats to 28 inch rough, and nothing that was like either Quote Link to post
