100% Lamping Dog

Recommended Posts

no reason a dog can not do all disciplines. im out daytime every day, but i also lamp, i see no reason why you wouldn't do both, mind baw did tell me them saluki types are scared of the dark :whistling:

 that's why their owners mostly lamp the summer months, when its not pitch black :D

I think the way your dog hunts is more down to your circumstances, when you can hunt through work etc and what you like more than what the dogs capable of.

Well,.if we are only talking rabbits,...it is uneconomical to keep lots of different dogs, for different tasks,...   Most dogs can put on a fair showing, at both daytime and after dark excursions,.

why would you keep a dog that may have the potential to be a great dog at many things and stifle that potential ?

it makes for a better walk if your dog can work up in the day and switch on in the night

A mate has a wee bitch he keeps purely for lamping, she's been out daytime but just dosnt have the wind or gears for the bigger stuff and she was never broken to ferrets as a youngster so he keeps her just for lamping rabbits and I must admit she's turned out a great wee lamping bitch

Most dogs can put on a fair showing, at both daytime and after dark excursions,...you do get specialists that excel at one discipline,.but as a rule,..it is sensible to use a dog as much as possible,..and fling everything that you can at him...

Truth is,.a lurchers' career,. can often be a short one,..so personally, I'll take my sport/work,.. wherever and whenever I can find it,..

All the best, Phil.

Time commitments and accesses to land...

I know a couple of boys that only lamp... Through the week the work day shifts and at weekend spend time with there young family's..

Only time they have is when there loved ones are tucked up in bed..

I have heard lads do more freelancing at night but I personally would not know anything about that

Some lads have no interest at all, in other disciplines of a working lurcher..

Each to there own

I see your point but he states the guy 100% lamps with no mooching etc, so does the dog stay in the kennel all day and only come out at night ? surely at least you should be daywalking the land you're going to be hunting at night if its local, only using a dog for lamping is a waste imo

I aint saying its right or wrong...

But I know a few dogs that rarely see daylight... Summer yeah for evening walks but winter no...

Its not my thing either but it dose go on and plenty folk do it..

I like a bit or all lurcher work and also think its not using a dog to it full potential...

But in life its what folk do... Take these Sunday drivers for example :laugh:

Its a good job we don't have the same interests..

If these lads were as keen at ferretting as they were at lamping they would wipe spots out

I don't see daylight in my own time in winter its dark when I go to work dark when I get back , weekends I try and get out if I can for a couple of hours here and there then it back to help out with the family as my son disabled it takes it toll on the missus during week so I tend to try and help all i can at weekends work is like a holiday for me lol. The only time I get free is when everyone else is asleep then that's my time . I'm thinking of giving up the ferreting game as I'm hardly out anymore I was thinking of getting a little dog for lamping atleast I could get some sport when everyone in bed in the winter , I just can't seem to find the time to do anything these last couple of seasons

Ive kept dogs in the kennel that were used soley as lampers, littermates were only used daytime. All the dogs needed resting at times and never suffered from being selectively used,in fact id say it was of benefit to them.

maybe i expect too much but for me lamping is just one thing a decent lurcher should be able to do, there has been times i've had an hour or two ferretting in the morning and a few hours on the lamp at night with no ill effects
