Shannagh Working Terrier , Lurcher And Whippet Club Sunday 4Th August 13

Recommended Posts

Shannagh Working Terrier,Lurcher, and Whippet Show Sunday 4th August 13.

Seaforde Road is situated near the village of Clough, Downpatrick, County Down and some 20 miles south east of Belfast, and about 15 miles from the Mountains of Mourne whose distinctive profile 'sweeping down to the sea' are visible on the southern horizon. With Sat Navs buzzing and phones ringing, we eventually found and arrived at our destination, Shannagh, which was the show venue Sunday 4th August 13. The weather was good to us, as the saying goes, “ The sun only shines on Gods people “ and he gave us the weather in abundance on Sunday.

There was a big turnout at this show, and all funds on the day were donated for charity. By eleven o clock the field was full to capacity with Dogs, trailers, families, all good Canine people out for a days enjoyment away from the trials and tribulations of everyday life. Thats what I like about dog shows. They take you away into another kind of world for a day, robbing all the ugly food for thought from our minds. As you grow older, these kind of days make you glad to be fit and healthy and able to attend and partake in the show. Long may it last.

It was nice to meet up with old friends, but also made some new ones. I ran into Albertj Tittering and his wife Irene, taking a well earned break from organising “The Great Games Fairs of Ireland at Birr Castle” on the 31st August and the 1st September13. As Shannagh show was for charity, Albert and Irene were also there to support these great Charities and the good Terrier/Lurcher and Whippet people of the Canine world who dedicate their time so generously for these good causes.

The quality of dogs at the show on Sunday was very high and would be a judges nightmare. All our little people were there, contributing in their own little way, and playing around the field with all their little Canine friends, our sportsmen and women of tomorrow.

The Racing began at approximately 12.30. Here are some random results.

Many Congratulations to Breanden and Sean, and may you both go on to win many more shows with your winning dog.

After the showing was complete, it was time for the Tug O War to come on Stream. Along with the digging this was the highlight of the day for me This time the men had some competition with the women rolling up their sleeves and putting together their own team. Some really nice team names I never laughed so much in my life. These 3 teams brought bucket loads of laughter, cheers and entertainment to the crowd. Excellent sportsmanship from all 3 teams.

Tug O War Team were as follows :

Team One Men – The Head Cases

Joe Boggs

Nigel Greer

Mickey Quinn

Ian Greer

Team Two Men – The Fat and Smellys

Seamus Kearns

Kieran Young

Declan Kearns

Geoff Hutchinson

Team Three Women- The Shannagh Girls

Ashleigh Chester

Collette Gannon

Joanne Young

Sharon Reid.

And the overall winners were the Fat and Smellies. Thanks to all for taking part

Next on the menu was the Digging Competition. Again the craic was mighty, and again there was a womans team amongst the men. Tango was there with his watch to oversee the proceedings, and the digging started. Soon Shirts were flying in the air, water being poured everywhere, bums protruding towards the sky, women and men screaming words of wisdom at their folk, and alas I could hear Tangos dolcet tones shouting stop, and the digging was over. Every bone in my body is still sore from the laughter and excitement the digging competition generated.

Teams were as follows :

Team1 Seamus Kearns/Mickey Quinn

Team 2 Jason Fowler/Aoran Phillips

Team 3 Paddy Gilmore/Shane Larkin

Team 4 The Vixens Sharon Reid/ Joanne Young

Team 5 Glen Doherty/Brian Crothers

And the winners were Team 3/ Paddy Gilmore and Shane Larkin coming first, but as team 3 had already qualified for Birr, Reserve Team 5/ Glen Doherty and Brian Crothers were elected as the qualifiers at Shannagh Dog Show for the Digging Competition at Birr Castle.

Congratulations Glen and Brian and all the rest of the teams taking part for being such a great sport. Team 4 the Vixens Girls came 3rd. Well done girls.

And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the Lurcher and Whippet judge Seamus Kearns and the Terrier Judge for a job well done. Judging is not an easy job at any time, but you carried out your duties firm, but very fair. Many thanks for that. Bluebell (Deidre Mc Coy) and Billy Harpur were there clicking away with their cameras , and recording our every moment of glory. What would we do without yous. And Deidre as I have said before, you are not only a good photographer, but also a very good friend. Keep up the good work.

And Finally, Finally there are people who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes at the last minute, to make this show a place to come with their families to enjoy a day out before the Hunting season starts. These people are all members of the NILRC. Many many thanks to Ian Greer/Mickey Quinn/Leanne Hawthorne/David Best/Chris Angus and Nigel Greer. The Racing was a credit to the hard work of the NILRC on the day, was a roaring success, and went like clockwork.

Also many thanks to Tango, Niall Cunningham and Patsy Mc Coy for all your help on the day with the Digging and Tug O War. This was also a roaring success.

I always leave the best to last. Paddy Gilmore, yes your heart is definitely in the right place. When you decided to run your show, your first thoughts was not for how much money you could make for yourself, but for how much money you could make to help people out less fortunate than yourself. Paddy and your band of helpers, we are all so proud of you. Thanks for the lovely memories on the day.

The icing on the Cake Paddy, I am told you raised a whopping £735 for your charities, which will be split between the Hunt and the local Autism group. Well done Paddy and your helpers, and I am already looking forward to more of the same again this time next year.

A TRIBUTE TO THE LATE JIMMY SCOTT, A TOP DOGGIE MAN IN OUR COUNTRY SPORTS FRATERNITY, WHO LEFT THIS WORLD ON Christmas Day.   I Am Free Do not grieve for me now my friends and family, I am free. I am following the path God Laid for me. I took his hand when I heard him call, I turned my back and left it all.   I could not stay another day to show, to live , to hunt, to fish or play. I found my peace at close of day. Be not burdened with this time of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. Perhaps my time seemed all to brief. Do not lengthen it now with undue grief.   Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me. God wanted me now, He set me free.   From all in Country Sports Margaret Mc Stay

The Combined Clubs Dog Show and Northern Ireland Champion of Champions Saturday 7thSeptember 24
Laurencetown is famous for its green fields, ancient buildings, walled gardens and extensive lawns stretching down to the River Bann. But as well as these famous landmarks, Laurencetown can add another string to its bow by adding the annual Combined Clubs Dog Show and Northern Ireland Champion of Champions to its attractions and venue.
Saturday was one of the warmest days of the year with the sun shinning down continuously. I got burned alive but all well worth it. Our Country Sportsmen, women and children came out to this now annual dog show to enjoy the last days of the summer sunshine.
Our summer Dog shows have become canine excursions from all parts of the country North and South of the Border. Saturday was no exception with a good turnout of Terriers, Lurchers, Whippets and Strong dogs.
And wait for it, the big surprise of the day and what a pleasant surprise that was. The McGrath Racing Club arrived unexpectedly for a family day out to support the show. And guess what they acted on the spot with an impromptu few races to the joy of many of the racing fraternity at the show.
The childrens handling class was first on the list and judged by Marian Cree. What a turnout of children in the ring on Saturday. I can still see the smile on Clodagh Gentle face on winning 1st with her   Whippet Clive. These young boys and girls are our sportsmen and women of tomorrow. I have no doubt in my mind that these little people will carry on the sport after our day. Well done Marian and congratulations to all.

LBKs DOG SHOW AND RACEDAY SUNDAY 1stSEPTEMBER 24
Scrabo Tower is one of Northern Irelands most iconic landmarks and stands majestically on the hill 540 feet above sea level. Beneath the pathway to Scrabo Tower lies the famous family run farm Scrabo Cottage Farm with its beautiful landscapes, scenic views, and a birds eye view right across Belfast. This was the venue for the LBKs Dog Show and Race day Sunday 1stSeptember 24.
As venues go for shows, this was up there among the best. I can honestly say I have never seen such a display of Plaques, Trophys and first class Rosettes on display, and all up for grabs on the day. Dogs and Bitches in every category were split up and each allocated their own Championship and reserve and at the end of the day an Overall Champion and Reserve.
Everything was planned meticulously, and all of the day went without a hitch. The rings were well spaced out, toilet, Burger stand, Country Sports stand, brilliant racetrack, and a bouncy castle for the wee people.
The views from this venue were to die for. With the shadow of Scrabo looking down on us, we had a clear view right across Belfast and beyond. This venue being cited on a hill, there was a cool breeze all day with small specks of rain in between.
It was nice to meet up with so many like minded people in the country sports fraternity. I had the pleasure of been introduced too renowned and international terrier judge Mr Robert Booth. What a gentleman he was. We had a nice conversation and he told me he loved Ireland and that he lived in County Tipperary for some time and knew the country quite well. Robert also presented Harry John Digging with a lovely Trophy set on a wooden stand for reaching out his friendship to him and to commemorate his time in Northern Ireland. What a lovely gesture.
It was a day of good will and presentations when Harry John Digging presented Peter Morgan with a lovely plaque for respect for running his shows. What better man with a lifetime of experience.
Niall O Cloghan and his sons were on site with their now very popular Terrier Maze. As the work in the field will begin shortly, It was great to see the excitement of the working terrier men when their prized terriers negotiated the Terrier Maze with speed and come out the other side to win the fastest time championship. This accolade went to Jed Donagh with PiP and Reserve to Lee Spiers with Buddy. Well done team O Cloghan.
Time passes so quickly, very soon it was Race time.

And Finally, Finally, Harry John Digging you were definitely the King of Scrabo on Sunday and in a league of your own. Along with your back up angel Gail Ross, who pulled out all the stops to make everything run so smoothly, and Sam Ross the photographer who took some lovely photographs, you brought town and country North and South of the border together for another great sporting day out.
You are a shinning light in our Country Sport traditions and for a first time show and venue, it was excellent and without contradiction.  Harry John Digging you should be proud of the work you done on Sunday. Thank you for a day full of joy and excitement and roll on 2025 for more of the same.
