six or seven seasons before breeding . stuff and nonesence. a dog or bitch could walk at any time. if you dont trust your dog/bitch after a couple of seasons. will you ever? it all seems a little ove

Do they not all produce digging bitches? After all if the bitches arent digging surely the line would die out because the bitches would be/should be culled....

Not long ago a well known dog owned by a well known guy covered a bitch that was pts after rearing the pups because she was useless

who :D I know someone who had 21k in stud fees from a well know Russell dog ...

I've always had the same opinions on the subject, based on how much a good dog can produce in comparison to a good bitch. Reading back through this thred my opinion has only strengthened. If more people valued good bitches and kept and worked more of 'em, I honestly think the working terrier would be in a much better place.

One of the main problem's is that alot of people are breeding from sub-standard dog's "AND" bitches :wallbash:

"Both" parent's should be "well tested" before they are bred, i.e. 4 or 5 season's of hard graft, "not" just a dozen dig's a year, and proper dig's not puppy earth's !!!

A decent line should produce a "good percentage" of good working dog's and bitches, "if there not then i'm afraid there's something lacking in the line !!!!"

No amount of work will make a dog/bitch any batter producers then what there suppose to be,, but I totally agree that both dog/bitch should be given plenty of chances over the seasons to show there qualities for you to wont to reproduce from them.

I would disagree, a good terrier man would not have to wait 4-5 seasons to decide whether a dog or bitch is worth breeding from.

plenty dogs out there that have sired litters after a season or 2- and then walked-but if you knew that would you be ok with a pup from that breeding? i wouldnt entertain 1 myself-IMHO you cant justify breeding from a dog/bitch thats had a couple of digs because it looks ok on paper or the deluded mind of the people involved :icon_eek: -thats my take on it-if the dog/bitch lasts 5 good hard seasons then you take a litter and pray that they any good- theres no set formula to producing GOOD digging dogs-if your lucky it takes time, and time, and time, more time, bit more time, lots more time-you catch my drift :whistling: for most its nothing more than a dream and a wasted life :D atb

the bitch should be just as important........how do we rate the bitch ?? finding ability....hardness....staying ability.....how do one rate before determining whether to breed from .....how many digs under its belt.......some bitches imo have such good qualitys that need to be bred from at early life as there not going to live to a ripe age.......so whats the answer.....is there a definitive answer ?

The answer is everyone has a different opinions so it is up to personal choice what works for one man may not work for another in my opinion the bitch has to be well tryed and tested 4 or 5 seasons but what do I know just what I read on here lol :-)
