Just Got My New .338 Trg 42

Recommended Posts

Hi Mega Hunter,

No not first. but my first .338 cal.

Been shooting and reloading for both field and target shooting, both small & full-bore for many years and have several rifles / shotguns.

I have had some recipe's given for the 338 but as you know everyone has their own ideas what's best. Just wanted to get a few more recipe's in from other shooters and then make some comparison.

With the current price of reloading consumables and reloading a big capacity bullet it makes good economics not to end up with bullet heads and powder left on the shelf that don't work well in your rifle.

Most conflict seems to be hovering around the bullet heads stablization, either 300 or 250grains Lapua Scenar used in a 1-10 rifle twist.. Also best powder seems to be coming in at Vihtavuori N560. Oh and Lapua brass with Winchester_Federal Gold 210M Primers.

I assume you have had a look at the Vihtuorvori webpage which (as you say)seems to favour N560

Otherwise Reloaders Nest has quite a lot of data including some loads in their 'unconfirmed' section all good info as long as you accept the data here must only be used as a guide only - you know - different makes of barrel and twist rates.

Because the 338 Lapua was designed to kill things with 2 legs as opposed to 4 legs, I doubt you will get much first hand knowledge from this forum - your best bet may be to search out American forums dedicated to these large calibre rifles.
