Slightly Out Of / Short Date Dog Food ??

Recommended Posts

i have feed my mutts on mainly beta maintance since jan / feb but i went to a pet shop / store and noticed its gone up a couple of quid and thought id have a look what else is there.

so i came across royal canin £56 a bag  down to £22, then i got to the till and it was £14 (75% off) :D a sack as its 2 months out of date :hmm: :hmm:.

the bag will last me 5 - 6 weeks.

my question is - will this do any harm to the dogs??

the chap i spoke to said that the more expensive foods are often knocked down as no one seems to buy them.

so my thougts are if i can get away with it being out of date and not having to pay the origanl price tag then id carry on feeding them it

i never understand how dried food can even go out of date :icon_eek:

i always thought that they put a best before date on them so that anything after that date they aint liable for :hmm:

Theres a big difference in a use by date and a best before date.Use by means just that,so if its one day over its not worth the risk.Best before means it will taste best before, but will not be as fresh after but perfectly edible.

When I fed complete I used to get Purina Proplan up to a year out of date very cheap: had to buy it in mega bulk too: so sometimes my dogs were eating stuff which was nearly 2 years out of date> never did them any harm providing it hasn't gone mouldy. Apparently the vitamin content can suffer in out of date food, but as part of a mixed diet, no problem at all.

A long time ago I used to do a spot of pest control in the huge warehouses on the docks, where 'caking' is kept to be used in dry animal feeds. Mountains of the stuff, ran over by plagues of rats... Believe me, sell by dates are the least of your worry's..!!
