I've a whippet. When I started him he retrieved the 1st dozen or so live then started killing them. I put it down to him possibly being kicked when the lamp went out. He's had a few smaller rabbits recently and is retrieving again so I'm now thinking it was due to the weight of the bigger bucks. Whippets aren't big lurchers and can struggle with the weight of a big buck so it's easier for them to kill it 1st. Doesn't answer why your dog's eating them but he may have had a bad struggle with 1 and that could've possibly caused what he's doing. Same thing when a dog is switched on to foxes... they hit them hard after taking a bite or 2. Just a thought.

i would not let the dog near a live rabbit for now, because evry time it eats one it is getting more ad more enjoyment from it. go back to retrieving a skin, if the dog tries to eat that then back to a ball or dummy.

What were you doing with the rabbits before he started eating them,, if you were feeding them to the dog with skin on instead of skinning them first,, theres your answer,, what age is your dog? You will have to go back to recall training also, as beast has suggested.
