shaaark 10,714
Have you ever noticed how many show jumping horses don't like the single gate? A gate is a scary and large object for a young dog to jump as well. Quite apart from which at 10 months the dog's joints are still maturing: I'd leave gates until he is properly muscled up and his skeleton has completely finished growing. It is a matter of confidence too: try to find a smaller gate, so he gets used to jumping wooden gates, but at a lower height. And always make sure that the landing is soft: not on to concrete or tarmac: if he jars his wrists badly at this age he can damage the growth plates which are the bony lumps round his wrists where the long bones grow from. Shoulders too take a real bashing when a dog lands from a height. It's all about building the dog up slowly, letting him know that he can do things, without over stretching him either mentally or physically. With you 100% on this skycat, if more people took a bit of time to actually learn about dogs in general, mentally and physiologically, before they rush out into the hunting field to have they're pups 'smashing' stuff long before their ready, there'd be alot less frustrated owners and alot less damaged/ruined dogs going around 2 Quote Link to post

BORDERSCOT 3,816
Hi , I'm having problems with my 10 month lurcher in regards to jumping gates ( closed ones ) He will clear a fence with wire but when we come to a 5 bar gate etc he will hesitate and look for a opening or even push himself through a gap !! Any info would be great full ? ... My idea was to find a gate where it wouldn't be possible for him to push through a gap and encourage him to jump and if that's fails walk on so he will be forced to jump ??? Info people 5 bar gate has been mastered with a person each side calling him on and he loves it ! Can't understand why you'd come on here ask advice about getting your 10 month old pup to jump a 5 bar gate, actually get some decent advice from folk who know what they are about....advice which basically suggests not to push the pup and to leave that kinda obstacle out 'til he's older and then a few hours later come on and say you've 'mastered' the 5 bar gate.... Ah well if it's been mastered all's well then eh??? Good luck..... Quote Link to post

North Wales --- dig it --- 2
I was wanting people's opinion on how to help him to jump ?? I don't ask shall I start jumping him at 10 month !! So I gathered information on what people suggested and implemented it this morning, and all is good and well ... Don't get me wrong I'm not pushing him to jump silly gates 20 times a day just the 1 or 2 that's cant be opened !! Thanks Quote Link to post
wild rover 548
When the dog has matured physically it will jump on command for fun if you start slowly with small fences and small gates or fences with wooden tops, then gradually introduce it to higher ones then gates. As long as it gets over/under/through the result is the same but I like mine to jump on command when the need arises or when in pursuit. 1 Quote Link to post

CBdogsA1 420
Woooaaahhhh there, stop the horse. You came on asking advice and there were people willing to reply back and help you, and no doubt others that will read this post. I'm sorry I gave you the wrong advice for your dog, I should have said 'get a rabbit skin dummy and throw it over said gate when you have the dog wound up and excited. Repeat this feat as many times as you can then you will have completed the task'. Alas I didn't because I care for the dogs welfare and longevity 1 Quote Link to post

Lab 10,979
With Socks on this one... If the dog gets to the other side, what's the big deal. Well I look at it this way.... I want a dog to jump and I want it too jump with conviction. If it doesn't and can't find a way round then 'drive' usually takes over and they do a stupid jump resulting in tears, rips and worse leg breaks. So you either train to jump or don't bother. I've seen folk send dogs over fences I wouldn't dream of sending my dog over......most of the time he is hundreds of yards from me coming back with game so he needs to be able to jump. No use to me if they can't!!..:-) 1 Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
I never said I don't train them to jump as I obviously do ...BUT I also don't encourage manic jumping so that every obstacle they come to they think they have to jump ... Dogs ain't stupid and if you leave them to work things out for themselves as youngsters they will find the quickest and safest way whether it be over under or through an obstacle ... So why condition a dog mentally to always jump when there could be a big hole in the fence 5 meters away that is obviously a safer option to take ......... 2 Quote Link to post
