Calling A Dog Off A Run...

Recommended Posts

I've heard lads on here over the years claim they can do it and the whole forum says either you are lying or the dog is shit...

I did it the other morning

Walking the bitch to heel off the lead after a morning mooch, we were on the way back to the car and just going over a car park when a bunny shot out of the bushes and towards the main road, at the second it broke cover my bitch twitched to start running and I bawled "leave" and to my amazement she did. She wasn't happy and wasn't walking as close to heel but none the less she left it and carried on with me.

Now she is no super dog, not the best trained bitch in the world and I'm certainly no dog trainer. She goes deaf on me if she's on a scent in the day and won't come to me without me raising my voice and gritting my teeth as I call her, which she interprets as "get here now or get a smack".

She isn't even broken to stock, but since this incident I'm thinking I could probably break her to stock quite easily.

We have got a great bond and she knows her job and no one can say she lacks prey drive because she definitely does not.

So can anyone else call there dog off? I'm not talking mid course. Just in this situation. Bunny in a dangerous place or somewhere out of bounds so tell the dog to leave before it gets into its stride.

The lad I was with was as amazed as me

So many dogs get stolen from in front of shops: don't do it Gaz: not worth the risk, no matter how loyal and well trained she is. Plus, dog off lead in town, no matter how steady: accident waiting to

ive seen walking by the shop putting the dogs in there kennels then walking back to the shop i wont even tie them up at the front of a shop

Someone will be away with it one day.....

I would rather the dog be on a lead than try to call it off in a dangerous place

I can't remember the last time my bitch went on a lead. She follows me to tesco 2 mile down the road and then sits outside waiting for me

So many dogs get stolen from in front of shops: don't do it Gaz: not worth the risk, no matter how loyal and well trained she is. Plus, dog off lead in town, no matter how steady: accident waiting to happen. Only needs a car to back fire right next to her, or something unexpected to happen like an idiot treads on her, dog jumps sideways into the road: even the steadiest dog can freak out, run amok in traffic. Yeah, sure it looks good seeing dogs walking to heel through town off lead, but IMO risking the dog's life ain't worth it.

I don't walk through town with her Penny and its quiet where I live. I don't do it often, I was just using it as an example to point out the dog doesn't need a lead to the person who said she should be on a lead walking from my permission to the car
