s200guy 12
After many years plinking away at the range me and my mate finally got a shooting permission. It's only a small rugby pitch but there are rabbits, woodies, magpies and crows. So far we have managed to take 8 rabbits, 5 woodies, 1 magpie and 1 crow. This is after a ton of unsuccessful attempts and we have learned so much very quickly. We just tried decoying the pigeons for the first time last week with 4 full bodied woodies and 1 flocked magpie. That morning the little decoy setup pulled in 5 magpies, 5 crows and 3 woodies so very successful! I'm currently shooting a AA S200 which I've pumped far too much money into. It started as a second hand Mk2 and now it has a reg fitted, mk3 stock, custom barrel band, custom trigger and I've just forked out for an MTC Viper 10x44 to replace my Hawke Airmax 3-9x40. It's very close to being perfect, just need to replace the plastic filler cap and possibly get a multi-shot. I've been looking at the AA 10 shot unit but I refuse to pay £65 to add more plastic to the rifle so the rowan engineering unit may be getting bought. Anyway I'm really interested in the whole process of using decoys so I'll probably be posting some updates about that. To be honest I really didn't expect them to work but I think putting the magpie on the outside of the pattern is the key trick to getting things to land. I've got 5 woodie breasts in the freezer at the moment so I'm very close to having enough for a curry We've also done A LOT of lamping using LEDray torches attached to our rifles. It's hard work on such a small field as once you've scared the only rabbit off it's a case of sitting in the car for 30mins and going back out. Mornings seem a lot better and the rabbits tend to come out just as we're walking about setting up decoys or checking trees for sitters. No pictures at the moment but I see some big bags on the horizon. Hopefully I can get a bigger permission as well but it's very very very hard to find anywhere. Cheers! Quote Link to post
SHINYBUM 3
good to read you are having fun and learning so quickly as you go along, when you are decoying replace decoys with your real birds as you shoot them, much more realistic and any incomers should feel more at home. don't waste your pigeon breasts in a curry, try them flash fried in a few herbs still a little pink in the middle, delicious, 1 Quote Link to post
