A long check cord couple of recalls each session plenty praise/treats. a slight jerk of the cord to get her coming back your way walk /run backwards and reward. using the cord you are in control not the other way round till the habit of coming back is established. use a whistle etc. plenty of patience with a 9 month old that has had no apparent training.use the summer time to develop a bond with the pup.you have missed out on the early months with the dog. dont rush anything just take your time. look at it as something to enjoy. a lot to work on stock breaking general obedience etc, but recall is everything good luck.

If you've only had her a few days and she has been treated the way you say, I wouldn't be letting it off the lead outside for at least a week. Let the dog bond with you a bit before you start expecting it to respect you.

Spot on Baw....keep her on the lead....get her used to her name in the house and garden make it fun for her to be with you....and I'd wait at least two or three weeks before I let her off the lead outside of the garden...

Couldn't agree more, I would spend time bonding and wouldn't even dream of taking the dog out and running it off the lead, it needs an incentive to come back...........

Get her really playing with you: build the bond. Roll around on the ground, play tug, talk to her as much as possible. And learn to read her too: how she's feeling: tail and ears up when she comes to you, or down. What sort of voice does she respond to best? Try and avoid loud voice: whisper to her in a high pitched voice: treat her as though she's a tiny pup. Mentally she may be months behind what she should be if she has been neglected in any way, and by that I mean neglected as in her mental state. Dogs that have never been played with, taken out and about, socialized, will be retarded in their mental and emotional development. Expect her to develop more slowly than if she was a tiny pup: she has months and months of misunderstanding and neglect to recover from. How fast she comes on will be partly down to you, and partly down to her own temperament. Good luck.

personally if this dog hasn't had much exercise then I would start by giving it plenty of road work. with the dog being on the lead you can start to build up a bit of trust between you and also the dog will get used to noises traffic, people etc after a couple of weeks then move on to a small field or garden and work on recall. keep at it and little and often and plenty of patience.

atb.
