The Exact Distance To The Target.. Help!

Recommended Posts

Ayup lads,

In the run up to getting my new hw100kt I have been like an excited child before Christmas.. and have millions of thoughts all running through my mind.. and I have came up with the following question,, how do you know the exact distance to your target, or actually, HOW do you measure it accurately?!

I put it to you, that one mans 34yards is another mans 35 ....

1 yard, is 3 feet, or 36 inches...

the distance from my scopes ocular lens/eyebell/back lens whatever its called, to the front end of the silencer, on my hw95k is roughly 37 inche, aka 1 yard..

so, if im walking about and spot a squirrel for example and lase it with the rangefinder, for example 35yds, and then shoot it from that exact same position, the rangefinder and the back of the scope will be in the same place, 35 yds, however the end of the silencer will be 34 yards from the squirrel...

so do you measure target to silencer?

_______________ target to muzzle? (difference of 7.5 inches from end of silencer)

_______________ target to the breech? (19 inches from end of silencer)

_______________ target to front scope lens ( 23 inch from end of silencer)

_____________or target to back of scope (37inch from front of silencer) or, 1 yard!!!

another example, if I set a target at 40m from the end of the silencer, if I then shoot it again from 1 yard closer so the back of the scope is 40m there may not be much difference you might say..

what if I then did this at 100m where the pellets will be dropping more, it could make a bigger difference then?!

as I said one mans 34yards is anothers 35.. as long as the distance is always measured from the same spot, eg, end of silencer/rifle then I wont have any problems I guess, but I was wondering how you lot go about it, you lot with OCD.. or have you never really thought this far into it?!!?!?!

heres a few pics

.............   Anyway, by some of the replies I have got to this thread its as if im a total noob who has never shot an air rifle or hunted before.. yeah I like to think deep into stuff sometimes,

didn't know you was gay skott

Your deliberately trying to make this more complicated than it is

I did have those thoughts once, it hurt, so I stopped having them!

As I only hunt and rarely further than 45 meters, it hasn't proved an issue worth worrying about. The range finders most of us use are accurate to within a yard and I've literally pressed the button twice from the same distance and had readings of say, 41yds then 42, the whole thing becomes a bit inaccurate.

So when you laser the target from your eye, your then going to take a yard off the number so it's at end of your barrel? Why not just calibrate your set up from your scope/eye? Ad keep it the same everytime you shoot? We are talking air rifles not full bore rifles are you planning on shooting target at 100m

The laser finder comes to eye scope is 2-3 inches from eye I don't think the length of the gun is going to cause too much drop too many variables go outside!! Maybe if you stop sleeping with your guns your be less paranoid :x

I 'slept' with yours when you weren't looking yesterday, I've not felt a loading port so giving, yet tight in a while.

I know skot I was pulling your leg another way I used before I had a laser was to measure out your zero from a firing line once measured place say 25 yards put down target zero'd here. i used a online meters to yard calculator for ease then I got a roll of sting and measured up to 50 yards and I marked it at 5 yrd intervals with tape kept it taught then got some wooden BBQ skewers and skuck them in the ground at the 5 yrd intervals and stuck electrical tape so the looked like flags sounds a long process took about 20 mins then you know it's zero'd from barrel ? Any help? Using a firing line you know where to keep the barrel! Don't forget the tape measure!!

I was going to set up my own range using tent pegs,, and have a wooden L-shape moveable target holder to use, or get 2 banksticks with string across them like a washing line and peg on some card targets.. making sure it was safe behind them of course.
