Ideation 8,217
After the recent (lengthy) discussion about running dogs out of 4x4 vehicles, it got me thinking. Pretty much all of the talk was of jeeps/pick ups. . . which makes sense, when you are driving to your permission, and using the same vehicle to drive the land, or you are driving about poaching. But I was wondering if anyone runs their dog/s off a quad, or ATV, either on the lamp or in the day. I've been doing it a bit over the last several months, starting just for exercise, and the working them in the day off the quad, covering more ground, and keeping up with the hunt. Also, when exercising the whippet in the eve beside the quad as it;s getting dark, i've had some good runs, in the half light / head lights. I think this season, I might lamp off it, as with the dog jogging beside all of the time, it's got to demand a fair level of fitness. Just wondered other folks experiences? 1 Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
I can work my pair off the quad day or night ....... Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
I can work my pair off the quad day or night ....... Do you do it much mate? How do you find it? The truck lamping isnt really my thing, but it's a bit different off a quad, with the dog running beside, I think? I find it really handy in the day, especially with the wee hound, in bigger places. leegreen 2,244
Too noisy for lamping and you'd need good access to lamp from a quad. Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
If I am pushed for, time but want to cover a certain area I find it brilliant ... I live in the middle of nowhere so,its easier for me I can literally run game from my doorstep but as I said if I want to do a certain set of fields in a short space of time I jump on the quad run the dogs there at a sensible pace and get the job done quickly ...... 2 Quote Link to post

I've noticed I often get pretty much on top of the rabbits when driving in the dusk, closer than I get on foot, or in a truck. You're right about access, but i've got some bits of land which I can use the quad on happily, and are designed to be driven around. Quote Link to post
patterdalejoel 669
in winter when ferreting on the quad my bitch refuses to sit on the quad mostly so she goes ferreting and running beside the quad. i wouldnt be suprised that with all the land we cover and the courses/hunting up she does that she wont run 10+ mile a day. by january she has back legs like solid steel. we'd be f****d if we didnt use a quad in some places, as we cover miles and you'd have to be an athlete to cover the ground while carrying all the gear. cookiemonsterandmerlin 145
Quality item despite folk knocking you for being lazy I tow mine on the ifor williams p6e trailer drive off turn round hitch the trailer onto the quad makes for perfect tool espeically after last winter as the ground was so wet. But you can use it to work your dogs off most dogs will not ide on the quad and preffer to jog along which if lamping alot is clearly going to affect a dogs stammia if your hunting but is good for getting the dogs in tip tp condition . But all that happens is your dog gets fit and you get fat like me ATB Cookie Quote Link to post
