perthshire keeper 1,239
and dont slit its throat the convulsions can cause stomach contents to come back up and you will get green porridge every where. a proper knife in the right place will bleed it in seconds

Place to shoot a sheep with a captive is from the highest point of the head towards the crook of the jaw/neck. Do not shoot it in the back of the head; apart from anything else it's illegal. Go to the Humane Slaughter Association website; they've got guides on there which are free.

Yokel Matt 918
Not that I have any experience of sheep etc but i've done a fair few deer and if you don't have a chiller butchering in the absence of a cold spell can be a real ball ache. Not only does it make everything more time critical but cutting meat that is still wet is messier as harder to do properly as it doesn't stand up to knife work.. Not to mention the bloody flies managing to find their way into anything. Whats the going rate on a hogget? I've been meaning find someone I can buy a beast from with the intention of doing a home kill for personal consumption. Edited September 13, 2013 by Yokel Matt
